My 94 dodge has started to not start. I hear a click but it will not turn over the engine. I have to sit there and keep turning it on and off sooner or later it will start. What is the problem? what do I need to get to fix it?
thanks
Aaron

Re:starting

It sounds like your starter contacts are gone. The click you hear is the shutdown solenoid opening up. The contacts are pretty easy to change and not very expensive. There's some good instructions here. Starter Repair You should do it soon as I've heard it's hard on the shutdown solenoid to keep working it

Re:starting

You can order them right from the link in my last post. Just scroll to the bottom of the page. 2 contacts and the plunger are $34.95. You could also talk to a starter repair shop where you live. They probably won't have the heavy duty ones but might let you return the plunger if you don't need it.

Re:starting

Very easy fix at home if you work on your truck. 10 mm wrench removes the starter {Bolts are in tight} and follow the instructions that come with the contacts. Don't forget to disconnect the battery first. If those contacts stick in the closed position, it will burn up your fuel solenoid and they are a little expensive.
Michael

Re:starting

i followed this site and the fix looks pretty good for the solenoid...

what about the brushes on the starter motor itself? has anyone had problems with that? should they be replaced also?

[quote author=berner link=board=16;threadid=7299;start=0#69842 date=1037801690]
It sounds like your starter contacts are gone. Re:starting

The brushes have to be soldered in. I think you can buy the whole brush holder assembly. I bought brushes and bearings and ended up taking them back. Mine were in good shape. I just cleaned up the commutator with some crocus cloth. Truck has 213,000 Km (~125,000 miles)
