Starter motor blues
Starter motor blues
I have a '95 4x with the cummins. Sometimes when I try to start all I get is a click. The sound does not seem to be coming from the starter. A couple more tries and it starts normally. It only happens sometimes and never when anyone who knows anything is around. Could this be the starter relay? The relays are easy to find, but identifying the starter relay is another thing. I sure would like to get this figured out before the next rainstorm at 11pm. Thanks.

Re:Starter motor blues
Sounds suspiciously like the contacts in the starter solenoid. Next time this happens switch your headlights on. Try to start it and see if the headlights stay on or go out. If they go out then it could be a bad contact at the bettery terminals. Have you checked the terminals? Are they free of corrosion?
Re:Starter motor blues
I had the same thing on my old truck and it ended up being the solenoid on the starter, the rest of the starter was mint so I had a local shop rebuild the solenoid and never had a problem after that. ;D

Thanks Mexstan - Duh on me. One battery tested bad but the whole system looked great, nothing apparent. 4 years into 2 delco 7 year batteries?? It might be optima time for me.
