Starter bendix sticking?

Here's my newest problem: I started my truck this afternoon, heard a grinding sound and immediately switched the ignition switch off, but the engine kept running. It ran for several seconds like this until I fumbled around with the switch,(to run and off), and it finally shut off. WTH? The truck is a '96 4x4 automatic with 130,600 miles. I have heard a similar noise once before, but when I shut the key off, the truck shut off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Could it be the solenoid or the ignition switch? I have a trip next week and I'll really be needing the truck.

Is very possible that the starter contacts stuck together and caused the winding on the fuel shutoff solenoid to stay energized. I would have a look at the starter contacts.

Could that cause the engine not to shut off when I turned off the ignition?

Thanks. There's a very reasonable old school rebuilder close by. I'll pull it and take it to him next week. He rebuilt the generator on the same truck about 4 years ago. The last one I know of near me.

You're welcome. Good idea. You'll be far better off rebuilding the original than buying a parts store reman. The contacts are actually very easy to replace yourself if you would rather. The instructions should be on this forum in a sticky somewhere.
