Truck will NOT idle

Pulled my 4k lb jeep today on a 2k lb trailer for the first time since my full goerend transmission install.

It pulled great on the way out and the way back, all the way until i started to pull off the highway onto my exit. Coasting and slowing down, the rpms dropped and dropped until it stalled, going about 30.

It starts fine, i just need to apply slight throttle to keep it running. I can slowly let it drop until it gets to 1100 or so, then it will try and drop to zero again.

If i slow down in gear it also tries to stall.

i checked the trans fluid and engine oil, which was a little low, so i topped it off. Also checked the fuel, seems very clean. Driving down the highway is absolutley normal. Any ideas? ive searched and searched but cannot find a similar symptom, but im thinking it could possibly be timing, TPS or the lift pump. Or possibly a bad load of fuel. Ill change the filter.

one thing after another.........

If its a 12valve you need to raise the idle at the back of the injector pump

Does it shudder as you slow down? Maybe locked in OD. I had same problem you describe and thought I had a trans problem , again. Turned out to be the speed senser , cheap fix.

I dont think it is the idle, because all day until i pulled off the highway it idled fine.

The convertor is not staying locked, im sure of that as i DEFINATLEY know what it feels like to keep the convertor locked and try to stop.

The thing that seems to have the largest concern is that in neutral or park, i cannot hold the motor at anything less that 1000 rpm or so. If i slowly let off the throttle in N or P, the revs will follow until that point, then drop down and try to stall. If i stab the throttle, they come back up.

Alright, i bumped up the slow idle adjsutment screw care of:
http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/adjustm...d_Gen-Idle.htm

i backed the adjustment screw out maybe 1/4 of a turn. The rpm reading in park went up to 13 or 1400, but if i blipped the throttle, it would drop down and sit at 800 or so, or just die. It still will not idle in gear, a/c on or off. Further 'screwing" with the idle screw hasnt gained anythign valuable.

Does this sound like the TPS? the trans shifted fine while all this was happening yesterday.

You need to either check the fuel pressure or replace the overflow valve.
Other than that it's rebuild time for the injection pump.

update:
I checked the fuel filter, which i replaced not long ago and its looks fine.

overflow valve was replaced 3 months ago.

In messing with the idle, i can have the truck racing at about 1300 rpm in park or neutral. as soon as i back off the idle screw the smallest amount , it tries to stall almost immediatly. At 1300 rpm park/neutral idle, which is absurd, it will still try to stall when put in gear.

Does this sound like an injection pump problem? Ill search for more info, other than that im stumped.

Did you adjust it in drive with the A/C on? It will seem to high in park, but it solved my stalling problem.

Good Luck.

That sounds to me like throttle linkage sticking. the ball joints on the linkage will rust and get trash in there and do the same thing. Most times it will be the rear one. Take it off and be sure it's not rusted, lub it or replace it and re-install.

Pat- how high in park are you talking? To get mine to rev at 750 in drive with a/c on, id have to set the park idle at 16-1700!

I checked the throttle cable, looks clean and i lubed it. All the balljoints and such on the linkages are all lubed up.

Did you install the governor springs at the same time as the new converter?

I installed new gov springs and it only required a slight raise of about 200rpm to get to idle at 900 or so. I can still put the air on put it in 3rd gear and pop the clutch with no pedel and it idles away. Sounds like something other then a idle setting to me. like its not getting fuel or makeing power or something other then simply forcing the throtal to stay open so far. You are aware the 98 12v's have a recal on throttle linkage? has yours been fixed by the dealer yet? I think the problm causes a "run away" truck but who knows if it could cause this too. Also hows your lift pump holding up? Any cracked hoses/lines anywhere? Just throwing some stuff out there maybe something will jog someones memory.

i did not install the gov. springs, as far as i know they have been in there for years. Are there any checks for the pump i can do?

I can visually see that the throttle linkage always returns to the idle stop. In my various times that ive set the idle, it hasnt ever been hung open.

If the governor springs are to tight, you will get almost the same results. It will really get worse with larger injectors.

On my 97, when the vehicle is off, and you move the accelerator at the pump just a bit, you will feel resistance just after what would be the idle position and then it gets much harder. I think this has something to do with the fuel shutdown solenoid and the governor arm. Do you think this might be where the problem is at with yours? It sounds as if something in the AFC is not returning to idle position correctly. Maybe you can look at another 12 V and compare it.
