smoke
smoke
I am new to this site and i have a question.
I just bought a used 1997 3500 4wd with oversized injectors.
I have had a 91 for years and love it.
I haved noticed that this new truck smokes durring moderate to heavy aceleration
especiaslly if it has been ran at slow rpm for a while. I believe alot of this is due to the injectors. is there any adjustments that can be made to minamize this problem. If so where can i get detailed instructions or is this taboo to touch? I am a experienced mech but do dot have diesel experience.
The truck runs great wow. 5 speed with a us gear splitter.4.10 rearend bd injectors/ brake , i dont know if it has a plate in the pump or not. is it easy to tell?
Thanks

Sounds like a nice rig. I think since your burnin more juice, you get more smoke. Especially during boost. Adjusting the star wheel may reduce your pre-boost smoke a little, but probably not much and spool up will be affected a little.
You can look at the pump and see if the tamper proof screw is still there. Go to piers website and read the instructions on how to change/move the throttle plate. It will give you a good idea of what to look for on the tamper screw. Even if the tamper screw is in place, I uppose a plate could have been installed and they installed a new tamper proof bolt, but unlikely.
Which leads to my next suggestion, you could try to slide the plate back litte to see if that helps with the smoke, but performance WILL suffer. It's a matter of personal preference.
One other note, if you do not have a pryo gauge on your rig, then get one ASAP! If your runnin a plate and injectors, then your EGT's can get way out of hand.
Oh yeah, I suppose a bigger turbo ($$) could help with the smoke as well. Good luck, Kevin

Thanks for the replys. I have a boost and pyro in the truck and they work real well. Whaen i bought the truck the bd brake was stuck partially on and it was causing it to run a little hot. I drove the truck home last night and i didnt see any smoke at all. I believe for some reason it was just loaded up. To much slow rpm.
I also opened it up last night on the open freeway - wow- i took my foot off the gas at 90 and it was still climbing. looks like it should top out a little over 100.
i am still going to see if it has the stock plate. Also i thought the star wheel was just on the 98 + rigs with the 24 v engines ????

The star wheel is only on pre '98 12 valves.
If the tamper proof screw on the afc has been removed someone may have unknowingly reinstalled the housing all the way forward rather than the factory position which will cause more low rpm smoke.
