Replace The Waste Gate?

I have been working all the bugs out of my new to me 96 and I took a hose clamp and folded the waste gate line and clamped it down good. I really did'nt like the vise grip idea because I thought it might tear the hose. Anyway, I instantly noticed much more power. So my question is should I replace the waste gate or just keep it plugged? I have the stock turbo on a stock engine.

Part 2: Also around 2k rpms in gear the truck flutters kinda like a gasser running ritch except there is no smoke. The truck also smells really ritch @ idle and sometimes runs rough @ idle too. Not super rough just more vibration and only at idle in gear. My idle is @ 750 in gear w/ac on as it should be. I have not replaced the overflow valve yet and I just changed the fuel filter maby 800m ago. I did add fuel treatment because the truck was sitting for approx. 7-8 months when I bought it. Between 1000-1800 rpms the truck seems great but below and above it lack what it should. What should I try 1st?

Waste gate is fine for now on a stock truck you will never get close to anything harmfull. as far as the flutter goes does it do it every time your in gear at idle and 2K, or every so often

Every so often. Sometimes it oppens up and screams.

Ok, I know this sounds dumb but what is the "waste gate?" I'm pretty new to diesels. I've read lots of people on this site modifying them. What do you benefit from this mod?

On a STOCK truck, the wastegate controls the boost. It's located in the turbo exhaust, and it's basically a valve that opens when a pre-set level of boost is reached, bleeding off the excess boost. It works in conjunction with the AFC on a 12valve motor, and the computer controls on a 24 valve, to limit the amount of fuel to the motor. This is designed to control egt's. When you start increasing fuel beyond oem settings, the wastegate limits your ability to properly burn the added fuel. Blocking the wastegate closed allows more boost to enter the motor which allows cleaner burning, and causes higher egt's, which is why a pyrometer is strongly recommended when increasing fuel. Tons of info and pics here http://www.dodgeram.org/support_pgs/diesel_ix.htm

Did it have fuel in it when it sat for several months? If so God knows what you have in that tank!
