Removed Fuel plate and still very little smoke?

Ok, first I am a diesel n00b. I just got my first diesel a week ago. I took the AFC housing off yesterday and moved the fuel plate all the way forward, then turned the starwheel toward the engine a good bit. I didn't move the AFC housing all the way forward when I put it back on. I noticed more power when starting out but didn't get any smoke. I turned the star wheel as far forward as I could, and got a little puff of smoke when I floored it from dead stop, as well as a lot better acceleration. I next removed the fuel plate entirely but didn't see any difference. It seems the star wheel is working but I thought I would get heavy black smoke from removing the fuel plate, based on what I've read. Is it possible the afc is not working, or am I missing something else?

I'm ******!! I want to be able to just ******* smoke everywhere!!!

If you want smoke remove the afc foot. Do a search on it. Also you better get some gauges before you do something you'll regret.

take the fuel plate and grind it flat where the notches are shaped on the front of it.

put it back in,

If you don't have an EGT gauge you can melt it down quickly.
Also boost elbow, will lower EGT's a TON, and make another 12 psi boost or so. (My truck when from '1500 egt no problem, 24 psi' to 'can't hit 1200, 36 psi') Well worth the $28 bucks.

Slide the AFC cover all the way forward. This is the major adjustment, the starwheel is more for fine tuning.

So removing the fuel plate doesn't make a major difference? That's completely different than what I'm read!

Oh yeah, I have done a little homework on grinding the plate, I want to grind it in the shape of a #10.

Gauges are getting ordered tomorrow.. Everybody tells me to get those.

Learn from others mistakes

if you are runnin without gauges, u shouldnt be pullin a plate in the first place.. we have a local idiot that does that.. itll come back to him..

come to think of it, why run plateless when a zero plate gives you the same results? rack travel limits your fueling, not the plate, and if so, u can cut the plate deeper...

I'll never understand WHY some people think it's so cool to smoke....
It attracts BAD attention (from the cops as well as the neighbors), makes people think poorly of diesel vehicles (gives the impression they are more polluting then gas... oh wait, when you spew smoke you ARE more polluting.....), wastes fuel (at over $3.50 a gallon...) and wastes performance. Smoke is wasted fuel, which is wasted power...... If you want the most performance you want as little smoke as possible!

Let me get this straight- you pulled the fuel plate and spun the wheel without knowing exactly what it would do, and without gauges? That's like trying to trim a tree branch with a table saw - and yes, I know someone who did that, and they should be locked in a padded room!

Put down the tools, and back away from the Cummins...... you need to do some serious reading here and on other forums before you injure that beautiful engine. (Not to mention blow up the transmission!)

I understand why, but thats just me. I used to think it looks cool and such but not anymore (since now I can smokeout a hole town). Let him enjoy it as some of use do and he'll get tired of it eventually.

Even with the plate gone, the AFC is still limiting how much fuel you can push. Either gut the AFC (many will disagree here), or get a boost elbow and mod the AFC for more travel. Then you will get more fuel.

its supposed to be a night and day difference. you deffinetly have a fuel delivery problem....something is up with your afc housing yes gauges are very important. i did a 0 plate in my truck full forward and dynoed it and gained 100hp at the rear wheels with the tranny slipping a lot and not getting all the fuel i should have been due to a dirty fuel filter, this thing looked like someone had never changed it and my truck is a 97 with 115k as of yesterday so, the old filter was junk. but it should be a huge difference way more than your stock tranny can handle.

I'm starting to find that the 160 and 175 pumps don't smoke as much as a 215.But these are different pumps.I couldn't get mine to smoke much either.Even with no plate and gutted AFC...But now with the LC DV...I'm trying to reduce the smoke output.Still say you want smoke put in a set of laser cuts and you will get smoke....
