On my 93, I removed the transmission and flywheel. I pulled the seal out without removing the rear adapter plate as it requires pulling it off of the oil pan. Depending on the condition of the crank, you may want to install the seal/sleave combo.

it can be replaced without removing the adapter plate and starter.
no need to remove the oil pan on a 93 to remove that adapter plate.
you need to remove the trans, transfer case and flex plate to change out the rear main seal.
