Re:rear diff adjustment?

backlash is adjusted by shiming the pinion and carrier. you need a specific amount of backlash or he gears will wipe themselves out.

Re:rear diff adjustment?

Backlash is adjusted by (depending on which version) the spanner and the carrier shims. Not the pinion depth because you adjust around the pinions depth to create a certain contact "pattern". There is a rule of thumb to follow when setting the lash adjustment. It is: 0.001" of lash for every inch or ring gear diameter.

You also have to take in the consideration of carrier bearing pre-load. So its actually, two adjustments that you are dealing with consecutively.

Some sets will vary, but this rule applies to all hypoid gear sets. Some, depending on the gear set "pattern" (which is shown by using gear marking compound, which is basically an oil based paint) will want to be a little tighter....and some loser.

If you have not done this before, and/or you do not have some of the required tools, I would not recommend that you make any adjustment to this. If you do and you make a mistake, it can cost you a few hundred bucks......like $600 or 700. Parts and labor.

Food for thought.........
