Quick fix for water probe/drain valve
I was about 150 miles from home yesterday (Sun) and my drain valve on the bottom of my fuel filter started leaking fuel from either around the shaft of the drain valve on the water probe or from around where the wires go into it. I pulled it off tinkered with it but it kept leaking so I called around only to find out that it was a dealer Item. The nearest auto parts store (Autozone) did not have a fuel filter to fit it that did not require this valve/probe but with some hunting and comparison shopping I found a Fram PH 3985 oil filter that fit right up. It has a little less volume than the fuel filter but it got me home. As soon as I get the part needed from D.C. I will put on the correct fuel filter but from now on I will always have this oil filter in my tool box for emergency situations.
I'm not sure what all models this applies to but mine is a 96/2500 auto.

So did they go to a cartridge type filter in 97 or is it the same type as mine but a different size? If it's just a different size I'll bet there is an oil filter to fit it. Someone will just have to comparison shop.

The point of the post was more about using an oil filter in a pinch and less about the water sensor.
