Question about exhaust...

Now that my gauges are done....next, exhaust!

Whats the difference between a resonator or muffler? And which one do I have?

Second question, with a 161,000 miles on a stock truck, is my CAT plugged? How can you tell? Can you tell by the boost achieved? Can you tell by pyro temps?

Thanks guys. :-*

TJ

It is not a muffler, although, it probably does quite down the exhaust some.

Also, I believe they started the resonator in 1998 with the introduction of the 24V's. (Im guessing here. I may be wrong).
Thus, I see you have a 1997 and, if my above guess is correct, then you have a cat.
I gutted my cat converter and it wasnt bad. I didnt notice any change to the trucks behavior without the cat either. That, I assume, tells me that the cat wasnt that bad.
However, you have more mileage than I do.

It is a safe assumption that the cat does cause a little more exhaust temp. So, the removal or gutting of the cat would/should reduce the egts.
Ways to tell... I would think the signs would be lower egt's, faster spool up on the turbo and, maybe a little more smoke.

Sorry I cant offer more specific info.
Rich.
1st. You would have a muffler. There wouldnt be a need for a resonator for your truck.
2nd. With that many miles on your truck your cats might be plugged if that truck had or still has a chip. Your EGT's might be high. If I were you I would take off your whole exhaust and just run staright 4'' pipe all the way to the rear axle.

Re:Question about exhaust...

Thanks Dieseldaze. I think your right about the temps.

SuperiorDiesel03,

I am ready to do the exhaust, and would love to completly remove and go with a straight pipe...BUT, I am a bit afraid of what the State Of Washington might think. I am in an area that does the diesel snap-back testing. If I remove the CAT and go without a muffler I don't know if I would pass their test. I know they walk around with that darned mirror on the stick routine. Any suggestions?

TJ

What are your EGT's running at? they should run lower. Flowmaster make a muffler for your truck that sounds really good and if you take your cats off and run flowmaster you shouldnt get into trouble. I forgot about that Differenet state requirement for Diesel's. But I would just 4'' pipe with the flowmaster you should be set.

Re:Question about exhaust...

As I mentioned earlier, I have gutted my cat converter which leaves a stock "looking" exhaust.
However, when I did that, I ran for a while with a strait pipe. I really sounds good. I liked the sound!
However, I noticed that it turns a lot of heads my direction... Logic would deduce that if it turns the heads of the general public... it'll turn the heads of local law enforcement.
Thus, I decided to put the muffler back on.

When I get a little extra $$$, I'll look at some kind of after market muffler.

Rich

Re:Question about exhaust...

My cat was pluged at 80k miles. I had it straight piped after that and then went to the stacks after that. There will never be a muffler on my ctd. But I did have the cat gutted. I like the sound with the gutted cat better. It seems to have a lower tone to it.
DM01
