purchase problem

Hey guys, Im looking at a 97' 4x4 ECLB with a 4" lift and 37's. The guy wants 4500 bucks for it which seems reasonable to me, the only thing is he has the tranny out and says it needs a new clutch. How am I supposed to know if the tranny is good or not if I buy the thing, take it to a shop get it put back together and find out its screwed? TIA

4500 bucks for that truck seems like a steal to me, i'd buy it even without knowing the condition of the transmission. I'd severely doubt there's any problems with it.

K, but the thing that gets me is that there are cheats in the world. It seems strange that he took his tranny out just to replace a clutch and then figured he'd just sell it? I just dont wanna be screwed ya know?

Why not start it? It will act as if it is in neutral. See if he'll put the clutch back in it, and then buy it ?

ya the auto tranny is the weakest link but the manual is tons stronger. Well he said he'll put it back together but not for free so right then i realize i was dealing with an. I dont got the cash floating around to take it to a shop to see if its alright. So Im either gonna have to take a leap of faith and score big time or get bent over.

I will do that, gonna go take a look saturday morning. This guy is strange, he gets the tranny out for a burnt clutch and decides hes just gonna sell it. He told me he wouldnt do it for free, and why let some dude put it in when I could get Browns Diesel do to it for near the same price this guy was wanting? So we'll see, I really hope it works out because this truck is bad.

I'd worry that the fan might tag the radiator without the trans and mount to stabilize it. My engine seemed to lean back a good bit when the transmission was out. My .02 ; he's either lazy, ignorant, or dishonest. I've put heaps back together to sell them, just so the buyer fully knew what they were getting.

Im not one to jump into stuff but these trucks are pretty freaken rare in my area, especially one that has all the stuff this truck has. So there is no way at all by looking at it i can tell if something is majorly wrong?

The trans you can check the input and output shaft for play. Select each gear and spin the input shaft listen for bad noises. Drain the fluid and look for metal shavings. You'd be better off to have a trans shop check the tranny out. If you don't have $50-100(more likely free) to have it checked out then you shouldn't be buying it in the first place. If it has HP mods then its likely the trans is worn. The NV4500 is a tough trans but they still wear out especially when powershift and pull heavy. Also you'd be smart to update the 5th gear nut while its out. Do it right the first time is always better.

He has a 4in exhaust and he said a bigger turbo. But nothing else, Im not necessarily worried about that its just I dont want this guy to have a turbo the truck cant spool effeciently. But I do plan on throwing some HP at this thing this summer.
