pump question
pump question
I just bought a 97 12v ram with a 5spd. The previous owner said he turned 2 screws in the back of the afc housing and moved the star wheel a few clicks in. I want to return it to stock, so i can put a plate and some springs in the pump. However, i have no idea what the position the stock screws were. He said the screws are locked down with a 10mm nut. From lookin around i noticed when people adjust the governer arm they move the lower screw but NOT the top one. Infact one of the links i looked at said to not move it at all. Anyone know what i should do? Thanks
On the back of the AFC itself is a screw that adjust pre-boost fuel. It's located right in the center of the diaphram and is locked in place with a lock nut. A cover may be over the screw and is held in place with two small screws and lock wires (If the lock wires are removed then you know for sure this is what was adjusted).
Going from memory: If I remember, turning the screw in gives you more fuel before boost. This screw moves the hold back arm (AFC arm) that the governor arm hits to control smoke, etc.... Think of the AFC having 3 types of adjustments: 1) AFC position - gross adjustment on the initial hold back arm position; 2) pre-boost fuel screw - "finer" adjustment of the hold back arm; 3) Star wheel position - Father forward eases tension making the hold back arm move with less boost pressure.
The governor arm plate has screws with lock wires too. Again most people don't replace the wires after making adjustements. Hopefully you can tell what was moved...
