Power Increase Question

Hello all. Thank you very much for the help on my last posts. I have decided to keep the truck and increase the power a little bit. What would I need to do to get around the 300hp range? Also, the stock tranny has 178,000 original miles on it. Will I have to do anything to make sure I don't break the tranny? I plan on getting an egt, tranny temp and boost gauges to complement the increase. Thanks again for the help!

What do you think is a realistic horsepower the stock tranny can handle? I am looking just to add a little bit of ponies

My opinion is that the stock tranny can take stock power and thats it! Only because even minor power upgrades that might give you 25 horse can add well over 100 ft-lbs torque. This is what gets everything slipping from my experience.

Depending on your budget, the bare minimum is a shift kit. Next up is a new valvebody, then a torque converter. Raising the stock governed RPM is a big wake up, then a fuel plate/boost elbow could probably get you to/above 300hp safely.

Thank you very much for the reply. Do you think adding a shift kit to a transmission with that many miles could cause some issues? I thought about doing a kit, but worried about doing more harm than good. If I do go the shift kit route, which one would be the best. I have researched a couple of the brands talked about on the forums and discovered mixed reviews. Finally, what would be a good valve body and torque converter to go with. Thanks again for the help!

I did the fuel plate and boost elbow and the stock converter slipped bad, put in a goerend valve body and 900/400 conveter and the trans now holds full throtttle in overdrive perfectly

Stock converter slips arond the 1:30 min mark with just half throttle:

stock vs new goerend converter unlocked in 3rd gear up a hill, you can really see and here how the new converter just makes it up the hill so much better without the nearly 2k rpm the stock one required:
