PCM to trans wiring issues

Hello to all.
Background...1996 Dodge diesel dually with new HP trans 47RE. Problem, diagnostic check shows trans temp to be -90F. SHOWED THIS WITH THE OLD TRANS WHERE WE REPLACED INTERNAL WIRING AND TEMP SENSOR. New Trans, same problem. Sensor wiring has 3 female slots for the 3 pin temp sensor. Trans will shift, sometimes from 3rd to 4th and then overdrive, but not often. Shifts only above 50 if I lift from the pedal. Temp sensor is new.
Where do i go from here? I'm lost, out a bunch of money and wanting to pull my 5th wheel real soon.
Oh and the PCM is new...Yikes.
Any responses will be appreciated and pics are great, thanks so much in advance.

My bet is a wire from the sensor to the PCM is grounded out.
Not all that unusual to find wires chafed though inside their looms and touching.

This might help, 97 is the same as 96 I believe.

The wiring goes to a connector right under the front wheel well, might be a good place to start looking.

Thank you both Brownie and Bill...big help...Now, am I right when I say the temp sensor has three wires, some way it should only be two. But the center wire is open when unplugged from the sensor while the outside wires have something near or slightly above ground. Is this correct?

I can't tell you which one of the 7 or 8 pins is 5V, Ground or Signal, but you should be able to identify them by the diagram and their wire colors. Not sure if you have ever read wiring diagrams, so for instance, Ground is shown as pin 3 on the connector, and is Black/Light Brown, goes to pin A4 on connector C1 of the PCM. 5V is shown as pin 2 on the connector, Orange wire, goes to pin B31 on connector C2 of the PCM, Signal is pin 8 on the trans connector, violet wire to pin B1 on connector C2 of the PCM.

Here is another bit from the 97 FSM to perhaps help you.

You might consider getting a FSM on CD for your 96, it is really a godsend when you are trying to track things down, 35 bucks at Genos Garage, I have both printed and CD versions, and I find myself using the CD more, then I just print off the relevant page so when it gets filthy, no harm.

thank you guys so much. So today, So. Cal. 90 degrees, trans worked perfect I think. Question. When I push the button to take it out of overdrive, it goes to 3rd gear...Is this the design? Always been that way since I brought the truck. Regardless, you input is without saying , just great, thanks so much my new friends.

Yep, OD drops out, I don't remember if it unlocks the TC as well, but something nags me that it did not.

Pcm

I've just completed a swap in a 99 Ram 3500 4x4 Dully Quad Cab A/T, from gas to a 5.9 diesel 12v . The motor is a 95 with the PCM and complete harness. The motor stars and runs great, I have ignition so all lites work! Problem is Tying the two together! The 95 harness dose not plug into the relay box on the drivers side finder well. I've been pulling up on the fuel shut off valve, crossing the starter an it fires right up but I half to release the fuel shut off to kill the motor. Is there a model year ECM and harness I can use to make the truck complete? Thank you all in advance!

98 12 valve with Auto is the only one I could think of.

Not sure if there are any P pump swap guys who have worked out what it takes to make the stock harness work.

Thanks Pat, that's kinda what I gathered so far. that's one of the rarest of them all! Cant seem to locate either the harness or the PCM.

There was a transmission harness and other harness stuff on eBay just the other day. I think I looked under 96 Dodge diesel trans harness. Also, I have the original ECM from my 96. I replaced it thinking some'n was up but it was a waste of 500, count them 500 bucks.
