Paying Kelly Blue Book???
I am seriously looking into buying a 1996 Dodge 2500 4x4 ex cab long bed with at,pw,pdl,abs,etc.. Anyways it has 179000 miles on it and the asking price is 11k yet Kelly Blue Book price is 9300 for an excellent condition truck. The owner knows that 12v engines in a ex cab long bed are hard to find. How do you get to deal at KBB prices for trucks? How much should I be willing to pay over KBB?? please help!!!

I have found that KBB is usually higher than vehicals are worth. I would be hard pressed to pay KBB. Just wait a while, he will come down or else wind up keeping the truck. The 12 valve does have a good following but that is already reflected in the KBB price. If the truck is exactly what you want then it might be worth more to you but if you pay more for it it is lost money and there will be no return . If it had DTT or a georend trans in it I might pay more but that is about it.

People selling 12v's dont seem to care about kbb, they can price them just about anywhere and someone will buy them, I gave about 1000 over kbb for mine but it was owned by an older gentleman and had an excellent service history, not the prettiest to look at but mechanically sound so I was willing to pay more and I have no regrets, I'd do it again. I saw a 95 reg cab with 200k go for 13k, pretty much if you want a 12v anymore your gonna have to pay for it. You just have to make sure its worth it to you, thats all that matters. It also depends where in the country your at, down south trucks seem to be cheaper they also have less rust, I drove 700 miles down to the southern tip of mississippi to get mine. Theres lots of other trucks out there, if this one doesnt work just keep looking, dont be afraid to travel either to get a good one, $300 will get you a plane ticket anywhere in the country then you can drive the truck home. I recommend doing that cause if you broaden your search area you are more likely to find what you want exactly instead of settling for one just because its close to home

ANY car buyers pricing book or website is for research and a buying guide only. What determines the price is fair market value which is determined by the owner of the vehicle. It really doesn't matter what you found on the internet, what you seen in the book you bought or what your friend the dealer told its worth, its what the OWNER wants for it that matters.Certainly there are those who would say "I wouldn't pay any more than what KBB says it worth" those are the ones I would tell to keep looking then.If you can reach a happy medium to buy the truck you want then your in like flint. If you go to a owner who is trying to sell and give him the old "thats not what the book says it worth" you liable to get a "Book this" attitude from the owner and end up looking elsewhere.
I have to laugh when I read these kind of threads.I have had many ask and inquire about my 12v and its availability.I just did a KBB deal on it and they claim its worth a whopping $14,545 with the miles I have on it.For that amount of money and me having the title all to myself I would park it out back before I took a loss on it like that....Andy
p.s.-rollerink....
I just seen a 96 SLT,Club Cab,4x4,automatic,power seat-locks-windows,tilt,cruise,air,sprayed in liner, aftermarket wheels and 210k on it bring 15k out here in Central PA.If its clean and the body is decent I would barter a bit,who knows, you may catch some flies with sugar and honey and get it a bit cheaper but with the price at 11k it would sell out here in a flash.

I have always found KBB prices to be higher than market - EXCEPT with Dodge Cummins trucks with 150K+ on them. The market prices are consistently higher for these trucks than KBB. I looked for almost 2 years for a used manual trans truck, and ended up finally paying about $2K over KBB. 70K mi and 3 years later I sold it for about $2K over, and the guy came over 1000 miles to get it. KBB doesn't apply here. I compare everything to completed Ebay auctions for a reference point, plus the local trader mags...

Apparently I over paid for my 98 by 1200.00 but ive been offered 15K for it..... I paid 13400.00 People are crazy I say if you like the truck and plan to keep it awhile get it. There not making any more 12 valves.

Compare KBB to NADA. What I've always found is a dealer always offers KBB to you for your trade but want's you to pay NADA for their vehicle. NADA is almost always higher and is what most banks use to assess value.
