Overdrive issue

I have a 1995 2500 with the auto. The overdrive just started acting up on me. It shifts into overdrive but then kicks out sporadically or when the pedal is pushed harder. I have no clue what it could be. I have searched for solutions on here but haven't found any. The truck has 147,xxx miles and has had the filter changed by the prior owner every 15,000 miles or so. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

How far do you have to push the pedal before it kicks down to drive? Mine will kick down with about 1/3 throttle when I get below 1800 rpm while pulling a load. I would think nothing under half throttle should kick it down while unloaded.

On a side note... I had an s10 that was showing a similar symptom once...I had to really baby the throttle to keep it in OD. It seemed to be that the OD only worked when the converter locked, so the slightest throttle pressure would unlock it and it would feel like i shifted to neutral.

I have the same truck with the same problem.

OD will kick in around 35MPH.

And ANY more throttle will make it kick out and rev to 2100RPM in 3rd gear unless I'm going down an 8% grade, then OD hangs tough till I hit level ground then it throws a **** fit. I can go 60MPH down an 8% grade but once I hit level ground, the more throttle I give, the slower I go until I hit that magic 35MPH mark, then it downshifts out of OD.

Going from 1st to 2nd to 3rd takes a maximum of 10 seconds from a standstill. And it shifts very firm and solid. But once I hit 35MPH, that's it, Truck will not go faster by itself, it needs a hill.

I adjusted the bands, replaced filter and fluid twice and it still does it.

hmmm. It just started doing it last night. It will shift into overdrive and stay there when I continue with the same rpms but then it will kick out and then kick back in and over and over again. I am going to check the fluid level but does anyone know if the throttle position sensor will be the issue? Thanks for the help guys I appreciate it.

My truck is new to me but mine seams to do the same thing but it holds third for a long time and then shifts to OD about 45 mph and then it hunts back and forth
till I get above 50mph.I take mine out of OD to help the trans from doing this which I don't think is the solution just a quick fix.

Are you sure it's not the converter you're feeling locking and unlocking? My trucks converter will hunt around 45-48 mph in OD, any thing above that and it stays locked. With it out of OD it'll hunt at around 30-32 mph with 3.54 rear gears. The converter unlocking and locking will definitely feel like its shifting a gear with the stock converter and such a huge RPM change.

Thanks for the help the TPS was way out of wack. I went cheap for now and followed the article that xzaq103 posted.I still have to do the band adjustment this week when I get time. The only thing that I think is still off is that it drags out third gear too long.any thoughts?

I'm having the exact same kinds of issues with my tranny... 1994 - 47rh (a618 I think is the mopar equivalent)... I'm going to try the recomended fixes and post my results by the weekend... Thanks for the link, it has some good tech info in it.

YEP!!! My TPS is outputting .2V at idle and around 3.2 at WOT... I tried to adjust it by twisting it, but the model I have isn't slotted... it's just round bolt holes... probably an autozone part installed by the previous owner. I'm going to try and find a bosche part direct-purchase on the internet (instead of getting raped by chrysler)... if that doesn't work I'm just gonna rig it up with some appalacian-engineering... put a 2 position switch in the dash and wire it up with a resistor that will provide the correct feedback voltage... I refuse to put anymore money into an automatic tranny that is probably going to crap out soon anyway (250K miles on the factory tranny)... save my $$$ and do a 5 spd swap. =^))

Did the install exactly per the link to Geno's Garage article, including the fiddly business of getting paper clip leads into the doggone dadburn infernal connector..... yeah, THAT's a great method. Going back to stripping wires....
anyhow, got voltage readings per the spec and though I'd be home free. NOT. BIG NOT.

Had to haul friend to horse show last night - took the Dodge. Acted a little funky going over to pick her up, and a little funky going into town - but dang, I barely made it home! The thing just drops completely out of lockup - zero friction, as in freewheeling at the TC. Feathering throttle, engaging-disengaging OD lockout switch, manually putting her into lower gear selections, etc - NOTHING had any effect.
This is really not a lot of fun when you are headed up a 7% grade, narrow two lane, steep dropoff on one side and traffic behind you, and no transmission. I must have been a good girl, as God pushed me up the hill to a place I could pull off. Dropped her into park, did the old Torqueflite trick of putting into reverse and out a few times, and got rolling again - briefly.
Repeat three times, thankfully sans the big hill. Same stuff - just NO TC at all. I can hear the pumps cycling, and got a lot of little shocking bumps as it tried to reengage. Finally got it to hold first gear and started limping home at 2500 rpm and 20 mph. Then, for whatever reason, it kicked into drive and acted completely normal for the last 6 miles home.

So.... electrical intermittent. But what? Brand new batteries. Brand new TPS, supposedly installed correctly. There's got to be another electrical something I'm missing?

Throttle cable is newer than the truck and seems fine - ditto kickdown, though I don't think that's been replaced. What the HECK am I missing here?

You guys have saved my bacon before, hoping you can do it again! I NEED this truck running, old C-30 Chevy is getting mighty tired (though she's hauling the big loads today!)

sigh.....waiting for the shop to open so I can call the guy who built it.

What I've found to be the easiest method is to strip a couple inches of scrap stranded wire then remove a single strand. Use that strand instead of a paperclip.

Knock on wood the problem hasn't been much of an issue lately. I have been driving less because of this issue and the price of diesel but when I have driven the truck the overdrive has worked nicely. I think that I will still buy the TPS but I might just clean it. I found that on rainy and moist days, it acts up and on drive days where it is alittle warm, it shifts correctly. I have a three and a half hour trip coming up so I will get back to the thread on sunday.
I really appreciate all the help and finding out what is causing this.
