is overboosting bad?

as the title says, what's the deal with overboosting ? i know underboosting and black smoke equals high egts but is there such a thing as too much boost? how will that affect performance and the motor? talk to me guys

Overboosting is fine as long as you don't mind blowing head gaskets and exploding turbos.
Plus boost over 35 just pumps hotter air and doesn't help much with egts.
Keep it under 35 psi and you'll be fine.

A lot of folks are under the false impression that more boost equals more power.
It takes more fuel, not more air to make more power.

ya i wasn't talking about my truck or turbo specifically just in general . aside from obvious headgasket and related issues is it not good? i guess im talking more about tuning here but if im at no smoke and egts are down is there any benefits to giving it more boost? or is there a specific air fuel ratio where my motor will perform best and any boost beyond that is unnecessary? hope my question makes sense.....lol

The leaner it runs, the cooler the EGT's should be. But it takes power to generate that boost, so the more boost you create, the less power you will have to the wheels. Probably not a dramatic effect, but some nonetheless.

so there's a fine line then. which brings the next question. how do u know if uv got enuf boost to keep egts safe but how do u know when to stop adding boost as it will be virtually ineffectual and just adding wear on the turbo and related parts without any tell gain? heard somewheres that if ur overfueling and egts r high then keep adding air till egts hit a low in a given setting and keep adding air til they start going up again then that means uv hit the sweet spot.hence giving the impression that overboosting creates egts. could all b an ignoramus talking though and obviously staying within turbo map.....

Look at a turbo map to figure out the max usable boost for that turbo, fuel to keep EGT's in check and you have reached the right mix.
