Our Stock Auto Trannies!
Well so far I got 230,000 miles no problems yet, it's starting to slip a little. I have towed some but the some that I have towed has been HEAVY. I expect in the near future I need to start looking for a new tranny, and when I do I'm going to get something a little more appropriate for our Cummins torque. Then I can let the BOMBING begin.
Mr.T: Before i put the shift kit in, the tranny was pretty sick, but this was partly due to a clogged up filter. It hung the 1st-2nd shift a little, 2nd to 3rd a little more, and 3rd to 4th something awful,and the torque converter slipped really bad. After the transgo shift kit, it shifted great from 1st-2nd,and 2nd-3rd, but 3rd-4th it hung a little(that was with my only mod bieng a fuel plate). The torque converter held MUCH better after the shift kit because of the higher line pressure, and the shifts were firmer, and sooner. Now, i have a 3k gsk, and it shifts absolutley great! It never ever hangs a gear now, and it pulls a lot harder. For $50 the shift kit was well worth the money, because if i hadnt gotten it, my TC would probably be totally shot from slipping. LMK if you need anything else

thats the response i was looking for yeah 50$ is a very worthwhile investment...did u put in in urself?? i hear its not very complicated at all ... kinda off topic here too but i heard that getting the 10 plate and 3k gsk makes ur peak torque come on at higher rpms is that true??
if thats true i guess that would be better for the tranny no?? and stall speed of the TC would be closer to the peak torque no?? but id have to rev quite a bit and it would turn into a powerstroke and i dont want that
whats ur opinions on that ( correct me at any point still learning
)

How much HP and Torque can our trannies hold with a shift kit, valve body and TQ? I am probably going to get the TQ and valve body from SMR transmissions since they are close.
IMO the stock dodge trans is the best of the big three. Try adding 25%+ more torque than stock to a Ford or Chev and see what kind of service they give. This site allone has 100s of users with EZs and other boxs on stock trans and not that many failures. Now add a Comp and small injectors and you have almost doubled the stock torque and other than a converter and VB (or mods to the stock one) alot of us are still using the stock tranny
I never got 100k out of 3 stock Chev gassers

Mr.T: The transgo is a little complicated, and scary to install, but not to bad(put it in myself). Its mainly because your drilling holes, replacing springs, and replacing rods, and stuff. Just follow the instructions, and youll be fine. As for the #10. Many people on this site swear by it. Ive never had an experience with one, but everyone loves them, and says that they're better for the auto's because the power is a little higher towards the stall of the stock converter. As for the 3k GSK. I HIGHLY reccomend it! It really makes a big difference in how good the stock tranny shifts, and pulls, and it actually is still getting fuel at the stock converters stall. My GSK really made my truck a lot more driveable, and it will rev probably 3300rpm's in park now(powerstroke is about 3800, so your not at powerstroke rpm's yet
) Also. We are ALL still learning. Nobody knows everything about these trucks, and thats why we have to share what we know on this site, so we can all learn.
Dieselkid: An aftermarket valve body is basically a shift kit. And with just a TC, and VB, they will hold quite a bit. Theres no certain # they explode at, its just how you drive, and what kind of parts you use i guess.

I have now installed a 3 k governor kit and later on the 10 fuel plate. Next the 215 injectors. ( used the thinest washers in the kit) a lot better start. Finally I got 21 miles to gallon. I made a bracket to hold the throttle lever back from going all the way to is idle position ( 50K ago). The result is more throttle pressure at idle or low throttle angles. I would consider a kit to give it better pressures overall if I was not going to sell the 95 4x4 extended cab with 105k miles. I will not buy a automatic again... jimk
yeah imdefinitely sold on the 3k GSK and have been for a while....what kid of response will it give if i install the 3k by itself (without a fuel plate) ?? right now i can get up to 2400 rpms then it just feels odd lol so i dont try to go more...but im hearing that high rpms are good for the tranny true??....i mean the way i drive right now is very far off from those high rpms...shifts at approx 1800rpms lock up at about 1800rpms highways speeds in 4th at about 1900 to 2000 rpms at 125 kms/hour
shifts nice and crisp this way i like it....and YES people do pass me by as i accelerate cause i accel like a loaded truck ...ironically i still pass em at the next light cause im coasting and they gotta heavy foot it again (driving it like an abnoxious semi and never actually stopping anywhere is fun
)

ummm i dont suppose they carry the 3k gsk's anywhere by my house do they hmm...NAPA??
is it still a great mod by itself?? or does it really only work right with a plate??

Well, Im not sure how well the GSK will work by itself. If i were you, i would just try to get some gauges, and do both. I would probably do the fuel plate first if i were you, and then the GSK. Before the GSK with the fuel plate, mine would only turn about 2200rpm's on the floor. Now it will go to about 2600 or so, and pull pretty hard through every gear. Mines a lot more driveable than it was. It just revs better. Yes, i think that the higher rpm's are better for the tranny because it pumps more fluid. You have the opposite problem as me. I cant keep my foot out of it
).
As for where they sell the GSK. Unless you have a local diesel performance shop; i dont think any auto places would sell them unless they somehow specialize in diesel stuff. Im guessing the GSK would still make it more driveable, but it would probably make a lot more difference with a fuel plate. I also might have found a cheap used torque converter, so im gonna find out about that.

Stock tranny is fine,it is the converter that goes and takes the whole party with it.Lost mine at 70,000 with no mods.Am running built trans now with lotsa mads and no probs.Even Dodge knows their torque converters stink.
