Exclamation oil leaking under water pump???

I gave the engine a little bath today. Probably 100,000 since the last one and it had lots of oil and grease build up. After the bath I ran it for a minute and noticed oil under the front of the truck. It had covered the front of the engine after hitting the fan. Reclean and start/inspect and it apears to be coming from under the water pump??? Does anyone have any ideas or has anyone seen this before. By the way no water in oil or vise versa either.

Ben

While it doesn't sound like a fun job it doesn't look really bad. The only problem is time! Is it normal for a good stream of oil to escape from this crack? It doesn't look that big.

Thank you,

Ben

P.S. It maybe a good excuse to finely put the gauges in that I bought a year ago.

sometimes if the gears catch that pin just right it will knock a hole in the timing case. Have you had the truck long you would have been able to hear the pin rattling around?

Is there any way for sure to know that this is what the problem is. Will I have to dismantle the entire front of the engine before I know? I got my handy little mirror out and looked under the pump but couldn't see anything other than some of the 100,000 mile oil ang grease in places I didn't get clean.

Thank you,

Ben

Oh, by the way, Who could hear the pin rattle over a 5 inch straight piped Cummins . Huh

You will have to at least remove the fan and the housing that holds the pulley and bearing to see if the dowel pin got you.

Well, after the last reply I made I got a small but bright flashlight, cleaned the area with brake clean, and gave her fire. I see the leak and it looks like just the spot I saw in the link above. I don't know if I have magic eyes or what but I sure see a crack in the timing case with oil out. The diesel shop here said they use magnets to hold the lifters so I may borrow them rather than the dowel trick. Since the cam will be out Me thinks its time to upgrade .

Thank you for your help,

Ben
