I go 8-10k between dino Delo changes, oil analysis has shown it still good to go even at 12k.

What you have to consider is that oil characteristics have changed immensely in the past few years. The recommendations for older trucks were written for the oil quality at that time. That's why you see 10-15k recommendations on the new trucks. Don't expect Cummins to go back and rewrite the recommendations for older rigs.

People changing at 3k or even 5k are just wasting their money.

Generally I agree with this but I personally think 3-5k oil change intervals is a good idea on a heavily fueled trucks. The reason I say this is because the possible soot loading of the oil. I mentioned this for some of the overfueled guys out there

Deezle1 I just checked your sig and I would personally recommend 5k changes or less. JMHO

with as much smoke as I put out, I change it at 3-4k... I see it as cheap insurance.

but, with as many miles as I put on, I plunked on a Frantz bypass setup... gonna start sampling and extending change intervals.

I've never done sampling, or anything of that sort, is it really important for my application?

Even if you extend out the oil change intervals, I'd change your filter at 3-5k .. unless you have a bypass filter too..

The newer oils were designed to hold more soot because common rail engines produce more soot. The recommendation on '03 &'04 is 10-15k.

It certainly won't hurt anything to change your oil sooner. Personally I have other things I'd rather do than climb under my trucks.

No doubt one of the major improvements of the CI-4 oils is it's ability to hold soot in suspension better. I agree on a lightly BOMB'd engine it will do a good job during a 8-10k miles oil change interval, but that really doesn't apply to Deezle1. After looking at his sig he is dumping in a ton of low end preboost fueling and I bet it still smokes pretty heavy up to too especially with that HX35 hence the logic for my 5k oil change recommendation. I don't know how agressively Deezle1 drives, if he is a lightfoot the soot loading may never be an issue, oil analysis will tell the truth but some people are not interested in it.

TxDiesel007 doesn't sounds like he is prodoucing a lot of soot so I would imagine he can safely extend far past 5k if he so chooses.

I agree oil has come a long ways and the 3k mile oil change intervals should be a thing of the past, on gassers too, but there are a lot of us pushing the fueling envelope on the engine far beyond what Cummins had designed them for in our application and in these cases I feel that it is necessary to maintain a more frequent oil change interval.

Yea, she smokes a bit...hehe. Its worth it tho. And yes it does fuel a bit too much for the hx35. Check out the 1st-2nd gen high performance threads, as i was asking about a twins kit! But just to stay on the safe side, I'll change the oil every 4k.

I drive agressively. I sorta be nicer when the fiver is hooked up tho, so i don't go past the trucks limits. I know them well by experiance. I try to keep my foot out of it, but when i punch the throttle, the tranny downshifts, belches a 35 foot high cloud of smoke, breaks the duals loose, and the turbos a'whistlin, It puts a smile on my face...
