on-off whine while idling and leaks...

i did a search. promise. it is on for a couple seconds, off for a couple seconds. definitely being CUT on and off. alternator? water pump?

leaks...my truck has been sitting for a week with a bad hub. i started it yesterday just to do so, and got under the truck. there is a decent size puddle (maybe 6x6) of some type of fluid. it looks like it is coming from the passengers side front area of the engine, and rolling down the transmission to falling off right before the oil pan...maybe it is just coming out in front of the oil pan. it doesn't look to be engine oil (not dark, kinda light, maybe a little red). i couldn't see where it would be leaking from the tranny, (unless transmission cooler lines??)...anything else it could be? i will probably take pics tomorrow of it and post it up. thanks.

I replaced a rusted out cooler line last year with the same fluid spot as you have. Easiest way to find it is to clean everything the best you can and fire it up. If it's a tranny line, it should be obvious where it's coming from. As far as the whine.. is it at start up or random? Could be your grid heaters cycling or a pully going out??

Check power steering pump or the AC pump. You can disconnect the ac power that will help you narrow it down.

I had a on-off whine last yr on mine. Turned out to be a bad clutch on the AC compressor. The refridgerant on the hi side leaked out causing the pump to cycle on and off repeatedly and burnt the clutch out....this was of crse in the hottest week of the yr last July. Your compressor will still want to cycle on and off with the AC off if you are using defrost, therefore turn your defrost off and see if it still does it.
