NV4500 won't shift out of reverse
NV4500 won't shift out of reverse
I just had a rebuilt (by Standard Transmission) 5sp tranny installed about 500 miles ago. A couple of days ago I backed into my parking spot at work and it would not come out of reverse! I pushed and jiggled the lever and finally got it into neutral. I have no problems shifting into 1st or reverse, or any other gear for that matter. It's just shifting out of reverse that is the problem. I have found that if I shift out of reverse while the truck is still rolling that it works fine, but if the truck is stopped it won't budge. With the motor off it seems to shift in and out of reverse OK.
I don't know if this has any bearing on the problem but the first time that it happened it was dark and raining, my mirrors were all wet and I misjudged where the curb was and backed into it pretty hard and then I couldn't get it out of reverse.
I will have to give Standard Transmission a call to see what I should do about it but just wanted to get some ideas from the rest of you.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that no one has responded. I called Standard Transmission a couple of days ago and they're still scratching their heads. They can't reproduce the problem and have no idea what could cause it to do this.
Are you sure the clutch is fully disengauged. Sounds like it's keeping pressure on the gears. The fork could be loose on the shifting rails, but it would be sloppy with the truck running or not. A ding on the shift rails near the detent ***** will give you trouble. Broken detent springs on the shifter will cause it to hang in gear. A twisted shaft. Just a list of things I've found from experience.
Bluetick,
I guess I should clarify one thing. When I said that with the motor off it shifts in and out OK I meant that if I have it in neutral when I shut the motor off then I can shift it in and out of rev. In fact, even with the motor running I can shift it in and out of rev as long as I don't back up. If it is "stuck" in rev and I then shut the motor off I still cannot get it out of rev.
Thanks for the suggestions though. Next time I talk to Standard I'll ask them about those things. I might even sound like I know what I'm talking about

Mine has done that from day one. If you load it up (ride the clutch while backing up) or back into something it is hard to shift to neutral.
Have always been able to shift the t-case into neutral, let the clutch out, shift to neutral and then shift the t-case back to 2H.
Not sure about a fresh rebuilt tranny though.
