I had amsoil in a previous truck and it didnt like to shift at frist. It took some time to break in I guess.
Before the amsoil, I used castrol syntorq and that worked much better. The only thing that sucks about the castol is its expensive and kindof a pain to find, I would use the castrol having to make a choice again.

Been reading quite a bit and seems like some use the amsoil and red line but the castrol is the only one with 75w85w and that is what they call for this tranny. I see quad 4x4 have this oil but no price, I called them and I'm still waiting for an answer, will provably order it from them.
Thank You.

I had a d3500 with an nv4500 and had the nut on the main cluster back off at about 60,000 miles causing the tranny to lock in 5th. Pulled the tail shaft housing off to locate the problem, needed the truck next day and didn't have the parts to fix it- so I bolted it back together and filled with Amsoil 80W90. Drove it that way for a month with never a single hangup in 5th. When I went to the Dodge dealer to pickup the special nut he offered to sell me the Chrysler Special gear lube at $25/qt. When I told him I was using Amsoil he said that was just fine ( and my cost was only $8.90/qt). I replaced the nut and put another 65,000 miles on that truck with no problems and it shifted great on Amsoil 80W90.

I run amsoil in one and castrol in the other. No problems with either. Bluementhal company sells the castrol by the jug
It is labeled as bluementhal but is castrol syntorq. I bought it from them on ebay and their price can't be beat (from what I could find). They also have a website.
Castrol is what is recommended by OEM.

It's been proven over and over the only two fluids that don't eventually destroy the NV's syncros are Amsoil MTG or Castrol Syntorq.
I know of two cases personally where Redline and Royal Purple ate the syncros in about 50k miles.
It's really not worth experimenting, others have done it for you.
These guys have the best price on Syntorq by far but you'll have to order it by phone> http://www.blumenthalmfg.com/

Transmission oil for NV 4500 1994 tranny
After finding out that only GL4 gear oil is mandatory for this unit and finding out that dealer wants $24.25 a quart for theirs, I set out to find a substitute oil. I emailed Mobil 1 about their 75w90 full synthethic. They wrote back and said "We do NOT have a product for your use"
Then the Amszol site shows the exact replacement oil for my transmission. 75w90 G4 and a lot of talk about why it is the replacement for a lot of applications. Don't use GL5 on an application that shows GL4 only. There is twice as much additive on the GL5 and it will soften your syncronizer rings and cause expense. Amsoil 75w90 G4 is $14.80 a qt on their site and you may beat that by using a neighborhood dealer?

Don't take a chance on the wrong oil.

I use Amsoil now (much easier and cheaper to get)...It has proven to work well and safely.
