is this normal for tranny?

My recently rebuilt tranny shifts perfectly during normal driving but I can get it to act funny if I stand on the fuel pedal.
At 50 mph or more, if I floor the pedal I get no downshift, just a steady increase in rpm and mph.
Should I get a downshift?
At <50mph...say 45..... if I acelerate moderatly, i get normal shifting, boost in rpm then shift back into OD....seems normal.
Again, at 45mph, if I accelerate hard (pedal to the floor) I get a downshift, sudden jump in rpm to about 2500, but no upshift....rpm stays high till I let off the fuel.
Does this sound normal?
I drive very conservatively and can easily avoid the over-rev condition. I just dont want to damage something.
Any thoughts?
This is a totall stock 96 CTD 12 valve...46E(i think)
thanks

Yes, sounds like mine. It will not drop into overdrive untill 47mph. yes, once you are in OD it will not drop by mashing the pedal but it will drop if you decelerate below 47mph.

Thanks Timmy...thats exactly how mine does...47-48 mph and the od kicks in.
How 'bout the thing where the rpms stay high till i let off the steam....when i step on it at 45mph?

yes, thats normal also. Thats the ESS talking to the RWSS and the TPS. Or in layman's terms the ESS or engine speed sensor, RWSS rear wheel speed sensor, and the TPS or throttle position sensor all working in harmony!

the thing that I dont like is they dont lock up in 1st or 2nd. this is tough for towing cause it's hard getting to 37mph(3rd lochup) from a dead stop trying to climb a hill.

For what it's worth John, new tranny here and mine is acting exactly the way you describe. Kind of scarey when it locks and just holds at lower rpm's, seems like it should down shift, plus it goes against warnings here on what NOT to do with a stock tranny. KD
