no power over 2k rpm

i'm looking at buying a '95 reg cab w/ 5 spd. it only has 68k miles, but when i drove it there was no power over 2k rpm. i'm not sure i could get it to 3k if i tried. seemed like if i gave it over 1/2 throttle it just wouldn't do anything. the owner hasn't driven it on the road since at least december...though he said he started it a few times. could this be old gas? air intake blockage? fuel filter clogged? or am i looking at something more serious?

thanks in advance for any help

Re:no power over 2k rpm

If it has a catalytic converter, that could be plugged.

Re:no power over 2k rpm

Is your throttle cable pulling the linkage all the way?
Or it could also be a timing prob.

Re:no power over 2k rpm

GSK = Governer Spring Kit.

Yes, Its an aftermarket item that raises the point at which the governer starts to defuel the rack in the pump (I think thats how it works).
Anyway, it allows our trucks to turn more RPM's before the fuel is choked back.
I believe the stock governer is designed to start limiting fuel around 2200 rpms? Please correct me if that rpm number is incorrect.

There are 3000 GSK's and 4000 GSK's.
If you decide on the 4000 GSK's you will have to upgrade the valve springs to prevent from floating the valves at those rpms.

Rich.

Dedar:
You might also check the fuel filter and the overflow valve. A plugged filter will perform the way that you are describing.
george

Re:no power over 2k rpm

Does anyone know the approx RPM that I should obtain at full throole in Park. '96 12v 5.9.

I seem to limit around 27-2800. I had the throttle linkage changed last fall - rust in the ***** caused sticking - and I think the lenght may be wrong.

Hate to take it to a dealership.... :'(

Re:no power over 2k rpm

It should go atleast to 3k when not in gear. All the ones I have seen stop there. get the 4k gov kit and end all the problems
DM01

Re:no power over 2k rpm

I had this problem twice and once it was a dirty fuel filter. I hate to admit that cuzz I am pretty good and all the maintance. The filter was plugged.I really don't know where I picked up the trash, but I did. I would run to 85 and it would quit. Start losing speed.

Other time the ole FS-OS was not working properly. That stands for Fuel Shut-Off Solenoid. It was not pulling all the way and letting the throttle move the fuel. Changed that and has not happened since.

Timing, I don't see how that would do it. With that milage seems it's pretty well set.

That's what I think anyway.

..Preston..

..PT..

Re:no power over 2k rpm

Both my 95's have never hit 3000 rpm since new. Both will top out around 2500 or 2700 and still do.

A 95 with only 68000 miles probably needs a valve adjust, filters changed, pre filter screen cleaned and get rid of the resonator.ALso, put a free breathing air filter in, such a s K&N. Your rpms should get over 2500, but, in my opinion, you'll only see 3K with a govenor kit.

Gary
