No cruise, od or speedo
No cruise, od or speedo
Ok, after looking at many many threads I'm at a loss. Truck is a 95 4x4 auto. Tach is working as it should so is volt and and everything else. Brand new vss, no change. Because my tach and volt are working as they should, it's leading me to believe the ess is working. Now, no cruise, od and speedo is all. All 3 quit working at the same moment. Checked codes, throwing 24 for tps voltage, I'm hard pressed to believe the tps is causing these 3 issues, but who knows. Please help, I've seen many of similar issues, but usually tach, volt and ac goes funky with the ess, that's not the case here. Input is highly appreciated.
Take a look at the wiring of the VSS to the PCM- if you have a broken wire there the truck will not be able to do overdrive, converter lock or cruise control because the speed signal is missing.

Ok, after a thorough inspection of the wiring from the vss to the pcm, I can see no issue. I just bought the truck, talked to previous owner (who couldn't figure it out) said also the abs light came on when this happened. Sensor in rear causing all of this maybe??
Dorman makes a straight replacement VSS for 15-20 bucks, I would replace it and see where you are at.
I can post the wiring, but you have already traced it back, based upon your symptoms, I suspect VSS is the culprit.
VSS is on the transfer case.

Are you sure you did install the VSS correctly?
I had that happen to me- I thought I had it in right but still the gears would not engage correctly.
IIRC the sensor must be rotated in the mounting hole until the gears do mesh and then be held with the bolt and clamp.

I will double check this, previous owner had this installed approx two weeks before I purchased the truck. Did you same exact symptoms with yours? I highly appreciate you helping me through this.

Yep, the symptoms were exactly the same.
The simple solution was to lift the rear axle onto two tripods and blocking the front wheels.
Then I loosened the bolt holding the VSS and rotated it in it's bore while the truck was in drive (so that the rear wheels were turning). A little snap was to be felt and the guy in the cab shouted that the speedo indicated 10 mph.
Then I tightened the bolt and since then all the speedo-related stuff works.
If you want to follow this course of action take good care for your safety, a truck on a lift with turning wheels has a lot of potential to ruin your day or to mash you to a stain of red sauce on the floor..

Ok, removed the sensor, which is new, then removed what I suppose is called the speedometer pinion gear and housing, held in the t case with a clamp and a bolt, the actual plastic gear and little shaft was laying in the bottom of the output shaft housing on the rear of the t case, speedo pinion gear and shaft must of came out of the plastic housing? The gear is completely rounded off and toast. Every parts store around my area seems to have the pigtail and sensor, but not the speedo pinion gear ( I'm assuming that's what it's called) a chincy plastic gear that rides on the driveshaft pinion gear, after some research, I found that there are multiple gear tooth counts on these plastic pinion gears, mine has the number 31 stamped on top of the gear itself, so I'm assuming that is the tooth count. I'm hoping this is the original speedo pinion gear as maybe someone replaced it prior and possibly installed the wrong tooth count gear??? I'm not sure if there is a way to tell.....
This might help you out........... down just a bit from the top of the page.

Update: I fixed this issue, it of course was the speedo gear (31 tooth) and the speedo gear and speed sensor housing, had to Jack the truck up as advised and spin wheel with my foot while clocking the housing. I felt the gear mesh and starthe working while doing this. It fixed speedo, cruise and OD issue.....on to next issue... thanks for all of the help everyone who chimed in. Tremendously helpful...😉😆
