Newbie performance question

Howdy --

I'm looking for a 94-98 12v right now... My only requirement is 4wd, A/C, and Cruise control. I'd LIKE to find a stick, but if I can find a solid auto, I'll go for it. Everything else is up for grabs... srw/drw, long, short, quad cab, single cab, etc...

I plan on using it to tow a ~7-8k trailer. Right now I'm using my toyota tundra which does an admirable job (surprisingly), but it just doesn't have the brakes, nor the tranny, nor the basic weight to do it safely long term.

My goal is to be able to do 75 up a 7-8% grade... without having to worry about gaining speed before the hill

What will I have to modify (if anything) to achieve my goal of not slowing down for hills (or even starting off on an uphill and making it to ~70 in a reasonably short period of time).

My goal is to find a truck with around 100-150k.. so hopefully I'm not starting with a tired old truck.

P.S. I know I could probably search and find everything i'm looking for, but I don't really know what to search for, and I don't know what kind of results to expect from each modification. I'm hoping you can give me a bit of a basic performance recipe... ie: when new jeepers join our group, and ask what they have to do in order to run most of the trails in california, I tell them a 1" body lift, a rubicon express 3.5" lift kit, 33" tires, and lots of skid plates Basic Jeeper recipe.

Thanks!

Surprisingly your recipe may only require a few select items to get you up to speed, so to speak.

Others will chime in, but basically if you have the 12V, a Fuel plate and some upgrades to the air and exhaust system should do what you are after. The setup I am running pulls my TT without much effort cruising those speeds. My TT runs in around the 8-9K mark loaded so I think we can compare.

The basic truck itself would tow that load stock, but a few upgrades are always good right???

Problem is....Once you start adding a few ponies here and there, it gets addictive.

100-150K,

tired? oh no, they are just gettin broken in at that mileage, you will see members on here with high mileage rams. Signature 600 has 280K on the clock and he is modified, Gunracer has 250K or more, mine is lower at the spectrum at 165K, and there is a 12V around town that belongs to a friend with 385K on the odo, and still runs well, (totally stock tho)even those gents with these rigs will tell you that they still run hard, provided that they are maintained.

7-8K is not much to tow for a 12V however holding your grade which is steep might be a problem to make a race out of, there are some things that you can do to ur truck though to overcome or facilitate going up that hill, Ur fist agenda A GOOD SET OF GAUGES to monitor everything, Mainly your pyrometer should be top priority, boost and trans temp should follow...(if its an auto) and/ or an optional fuel pressure.... Ur turbo is gonna be the big one going up that hill, it will naturally spool, BUT TO SUPPLY IT WITH SPOOL ur gonna need fuel, and for fuel u will need a different plate or adjust the one that you already have by moving it forward, do a search for plate adjustments, IE the most common plate used is a 10 plate, great for towing, good pickup, A governers spring kit, or GSK 3000 will widen your existing powerband, those along with gauges are your basic upgrades

If you wanna go even more, do some delivery valves, injectors, twin turbos, and more... a good clutch or rebuilt tranny, time the rig from the stock timing, advance it to more efficiently burn and use fuel, less restrictive airflow, IE scotty II or BHAF (big honkin air filter?) and an exhaust...

More can be done platewise (zero or 100 plate) but that should get u started for now. If you go to a zero or a 100 u best have a much better turbo than ur stock 35 can handle...

You will learn more as you go, welcome to DTR! and hope u find what u are lookin for.. Plenty of great trucks in teh classifieds here... best of luck!

Tx

Thanks folks, thats exactly what I was looking for.

Now I can read up on cam plates, Governor springs, and exhaust hacking

WHIFF, unfortunately, since you're in Texas, and I'm in CA, I can't offer you anything.. If you make a trip out to the Bay Area, CA though, let me know

Edit: And the pictures that I put into my members gallery were approved, so now you can see the pictures of my toy that I'll be towing around
