The thermostat built into the fuel strainer \ heater assembly on my 97 CTD is all fried.
It looks like there was a short and everything is all melted. It dosent look like the thermostat is replaceable by itself. I would need at least the upper part of the assembly where the thermostat is and the 6" cable that attaches to it.

Does anyone have one of these assemblies off a blown engine that they would like to SELL?
Or know of anyone with a wreck lyeing around.

Good luck finding one period, little alone one that isn't fried just like yours and mine was. You can order the replacement parts for the strainer/heater assembly from Cummins. I just ordered one last week and provide you with the part numbers and prices if you want.

I called about a dozen salvage yards when I was looking form mine and they just laughed.

PS. You should know that when these thermostats burn up it is also very common that the internal heating element burns up also. I could tell mine did when I unplugged it and the plug was all melted. Mine sucked air through the pins of the electrical connection and caused missing and smoking problems. If you haven't experienced any performance problems I wouldn't unplug the element because it might just start leaking air into your fuel system and cause the kinds of problems just described.

Let me know if you want those part numbers and prices. I got everything to completely rebuild the strainer/heater and it was about $110.

 

Where you able to replace just the thermostat? Or did you have to buy a hole new housing.
Do you think I really even need the fuel system heater??

I'm sure I will repair it but I'm just wondering if i even need it

The thermostat is part of the wiring harness, cost is around $40 or so. I agree the heating element is also probably junk. The cost of that was around $40 as well. I can dig up the PN's if you need them.

mine fried about 2 years ago, I have the new harness ready to put on, just got sidetracked with other project.
Still runs fine, starts upi fine, even in chicago winter.

 

Can the heater be deleted from the system for guys that dont run in cold weather? I have a new fuel pump for a 780 case back hoe ( 6bt) and I have wondered if it would work on my 95 dodge. Good luck Jim

 

Sure can, lots of folks in the warmer spots just bypass the fuel line straight to the lift pump if the heater starts leaking.
Not sure on the fuel pump but my bet is they're interchangable.

 

Or you can remove the heating element itself and screw the prefilter bottom to the top postion of the assembly.

My heater/strainer is fried as well. Whats the deal? Why is this a common problem?

My mechanic quoted me $280 for replacement? Is he jipping me? Where is the best place to order online?

 

$280 is rediculous unless that includes labor.

Last time I purchased one complete with wiring harness I think I spent just over $100.

 

get the harness from cummins and the strainer kit from fleetgard.

bought my truck and later found the perfilter / heater assembly was missing !

did not seem to matter even at 13 below o last winter in chicago !

i dont plan to replace it ! and less to maintain !

 

I was just at Cummins Cal Pacific on Monday, buying a transfer pump, and the gal at the parts counter told me Cummins didn't make any parts for the fuel strainer/heater assy. She said Dodge supplied them and I should go to the Dodge dealer! I thought at the time she didn't know what she was talking about, but she was looking at the computer and I wasn't.

On the plus side I got to see about 25 shiny new red Cummins engines sitting out in the parking lot, each was fastened down to a pallet awaiting shipment somewhere. I couldn't get close to them, so I'm not sure which engines they were--they weren't B engines they were too big. Beautiful!
