More AFC questions.
I've been playing around with the fuel plate and AFC for the past few days, and have some further questions.
Moving the plate forward does give more power - no surprise there. But, moving the AFC forward unleashes that power and gives a fair amount of smoke off idle, moving it back muzzles both power and smoke. According to all I've read that shouldn't be the case.
There are marks on the aneroid arm where the governor arm is moving up and down on it. Is it possible that the aneroid arm isn't moving forward far enough for the governor arm to reach the fuel plate? If so, that would explain why moving the AFC results in more power - doing so reduces the amount of travel needed for the governor arm to contact the fuel plate.
Or, is it possible the governor arm is out of adjustment? And if so, how does one tell? I haven't gone that far into the pump yet, and won't until finding a manual or diagrams of what's in there. I'm confident of my ability as a mechanic, but not enough to go exploring something as expensive as an injection pump without some direction.
Thanks for any light you can shed.

Have you adjusted the starwheel at all? That sets the rate of travel vs. boost. If you have the starwheel tight, it will take more boost for it to travel further to get more fuel. The AFC isn't overly complicated. Take it into the shop and take a good look at it and figure it out. 12valve on here has some good pictures on when he increased the travel on his. A nice how-does-it-work kind of thing.
Thanks for the tip. I'll check out 12valve's post. The starwheel is now set so that there is a smidgen of smoke with heavy throttle until 1300 rpm or so. Light throttle = no smoke. It seems to have full power at the other end also. Maybe the problem has been solved.
