Mine Blew UP

Has anyone rebiult one of these beasts. With the help of the Rocky Mountain Cummins service folks my truck now has a blown engine. Cracked or broken piston according to the contents of the oil filter and the oil regurgitating from the dip stick tube. Thats what I get for letting the "professionals" work on it. Any ideas or do's and dont's for rebiulding it? I have many a gas engine under my belt but this will be the first oil burner.

So what did they do, to mess it up?? If they did it, I would do everything i could to make them pay for it.

Three improprly installed head gaskets and five improper valve adjustments, no one else has worked on it. Cant see any other reson for a 200,ooo mile blow up. Can you?

The only problem with making them fix it is; I cant prove they did it, and do I really want them to work on it again.
I got a partial refund for some other maintenance they performed. I am super unhappy with those folks! Has anyone done a rebiuld? I cant see where I could go wrong, least I would only have myself to blame if it blew up again, hah!

rebuild

ive built a couple in college and at my old job. youll go through a lot of 8, 10, 13, 15 mm bolts but you can do it, hows the bearings in it and the crank, you can get everything you need from cummins including your piston, gasket set, bearings and whatever else youll need, you will find that this is one of the easier engines to build, the connecting rods go a certain way remember that cause you can put them in backwords and then the motor wont turn good luck

Going to be helping my buddy do an inframe rebuild myself this weekend. We already did the head gasket and still having coolant in oil problems, turns out a headbolt is stripped near the bottom.A little helicoil action and we should be good to go.Should be a real interesting few days.

Fuel srew under the cover at the end of the pump, cheap way to get a bit more power and a great way to load yuppie cars with smoke at a light!
I took it back to the same folks twice because of warranty , then to another cummins service shop 300 miles away when it flaked out after we moved.....seemed like they were better but now I am not so sure....not even sure that its thier fault, cant see any other reason for it though. Only other thing I could think of is if the fuel was a bad mix:low sulphur, cetane ?????? I dont know, just frustrated, I really need that truck .

No I had not mentioned it , due to the fact that the truck has been set like that by Cummins.

No , no gauges, the fuel screw doesnt apparently cuase enough problems to warrant problems, per cummins mechanics. I was going to add them if I added any other mods.
It will be a fun rebiuld, just have to wait for spring when it warms up. My new home doesnt have a garage and Im not working in a tent at minus 5 degrees. I may just pull the pertinant parts and put them in my 66 ford 4x4. The dodge has been having some issues and Ithey just dont biuld them like they used to. Besides , I havent biult a truck in a few years so it would be fun.
My thing was sticking 472 and 500 cid caddy motors where they did not belong......one in a 57 chevy half ton, and one in a 66 jeep gladiator. Wow , they were so much fun , especially in launch mode off a light!

i don't really know what your talking about when you say fuel screw. It is a p7100 pump that you have and they don't have fuel screws like the ve rotory pumps do. You must be talking about the afc starwheel or just about sliding the plate forward. thats basically all you can do with all stock components other then totally removing the plate.

Yes it is the starwheel, sorry for the incorrect nomenclature. I played with the adjustment and checked mileage and power (seat of the pants test) after checking into pro's and con's of adjustment. Gains in both were minor.
I don't feel that this had any bearing on my current situation, nor does any techs that I have spoken with. Maybe just one of those things that happen, or a filter breakdown or something like that.
In the spring I will didassemble it and start from scratch, might just slam the whole thing in my old ford truck when it gets put back together. The ram is showing signs of age and not biult as well as the 66 ford. We will see what happens. Hopefully I am still welcome here after mentioning the ford swap!
