Major squeaking comin from under the hood

Guys i need some help

I have had a squeak for the past two days that is starting to drive me bonkers under the hood. I cannot seem to pinpoint it, and its loud enough that I can hear it over the straight pipe exhaust.

The only thing i do know is that when i take off at anything over 1500 rpms the squeaking stops. At idle, and up to about 1400-1500 you can still hear it, and it seems to get weaker along the upper range of my scale before it dies off

That i know of the tensioner has never been replaced, its my main suspect, anyone else have any annoying squeaks similar to mine? and what were they?

Thanks in advance!

Rick

Mine does it usually after it rains or if the air seams damp.(or so it seems to me)
The sound usually goes away after around 30 miles of driving, and I definately hate the sound. I can hear it over the stacks! My best guess is something to do with the belt tensioner.

Possible for it to be a fan belt, with the truck off just rub a small bar of soap along the back side of the belt. Worth a try and it is free. If it works then pick up a little container of belt dressing.

Thanks Ross

i think i found the problem tho.. The belt keeps falling off of the tensioner... not good, ive replaced it three times, and the belt still keeps fallin off, belt looks to be in good shape too..

Im gonna pick up a tensioner and new belt and be done with it...

look and make sure your alternator is tight. Mine was loose and riding at an angle and it was causing the belt to ride against the tensioner, rather than falling off the back like yours is. And my tensioner needed replacing too. It is easy, but the new tensioner at NAPA was almost $140.

Just did, alternator is flawless

nice and tight, and the whole job of tensioner replacement, lasts about 5 minutes start to finish, then puttin the new belt back on, for a total of about 10 mins...

Thanks!

good thing they have a belt routing sticker under the hood, huh?

"now, let me see. this went over this one and under this one. or was it under this one and over that one?"

Check your water pump weep hole. I had a squeak that came on slowly for 3 weeks and got progressively louder. I thought it was the tensioner, so I bought one to put in. The morning of the install, I had a puddle of anti-freeze under my rig. Took about 45 min from hood up to hood down and no noises since.
