limited slip not working??
limited slip not working??
i was playing in the field today in a little mud and realized only my left rear wheel would spin in the mud(i was in 2wd). that didnt seem right to me so i kept trying to get them to both spin.if id goose it and let off, they would both spin momentarily-then left only.i know from playing in the mud before that they would both spin(and from driving in the rain).also, when rear end is jacked up off the ground, if you turn one side by hand the other would turn in the same direction. about a month ago, i replaced my rear end fluid and added the limited slip additive. am i losing my mind? or, do i have a problem? thanks in advance !!
Re:limited slip not working??
I wonder if maybe your clutches have failed? Maybe to much friction modifier? Did you try going to a parking lot and doing some figure eights? No matter what you find it sounds to me like you need to atleast pull the cover again. When you pull the cover you might get lucky and find the problem.

Re:limited slip not working??
Sounds like they are working correctly to me. I always thought a "limited" slip would only engage to locked when power is being applied, and disengages when there is no torqu. Where as a locker is manualy engaged and a spool is locked all of the time.
Re:limited slip not working??
Guess ill have to call a dealership in the area . is there a difference between the limited slip additive you get off the shelf at the auto parts and the stuff the dealer sells?? ive read a couple of articles where people referred to it as a friction modifier-is there a difference?? anyone......anyone??
Re:limited slip not working??
It's the same stuff. Some reccomend a specific brand, some say it does not matter. This modifier actually make the fluid "more slippery". It's to be added after a rear diff fluid change.
The problem after a diff fluid change is you can get grabbing or chattering of the clutch plates, so one ounce of fluid is added, then driven again, onather ounce and driven and so on. One ounce at a time till the chattering is gone then don't add any more.
You can try a diff fluid change and add additive as described above and see if it helps. How much additive did you put in and what type of diff fluid did you use? You might have to start from scratch by putting in new fluid, doing a few figure eights in a parking lot, see if the clutches start to grab again, then start to add the additive till chatter is gone then stop.
A slight "grabiness" in turns on concrete is about right but this is highly subjective. Good luck, Kevin

Re:limited slip not working??
yeah, i didnt know i was supposed to add it like that-oops!! i used the standard(non-synthetic) weight gear lube it was valvoline brand. the additive i used was called trans-x in a blue and white squeeze tube from the local avanced auto parts. my shop manual(haynes) just said to add if needed. the tube said to add ? amount of ounces per total diff. capacity so thats all i did. guess ill have to drain and refill. are there recommendations for a better brand??
