Lift pump PSI or gov problem, I need some advice from the gurus!

Ever since I installed my 215 pump I have been fighting some dial in issues that I thought was in the govenor but now I am begining to suspect the lift pump. I put a temporary gauge on it today and had low but in spec preasures. 18 PSI at idle and 26 and 2500 RPM with no load with a warm motor. Is the preasure to low for a mild motor? Right now I am getting a stumble at 1K RPM about 20% of the time that feels like a gasser hickuping with an out of adjustment choke. Once it stumbles the truck runs fine. Also the Black smoke seems to be down from what it was and I am having some minor turbo lag with the new turbo. Dont get me wrong I can roll some coal but not nearly as much as I could a few weeks ago. I have gotten 20 MPG 4 out of the last 5 tanks so I am kinda at a loss here. What do you gurus think. Fuel preasure or govenor problem?

timing slip maby. have you changed the fuel filter and cleaned the prefilter in a while? fp sounds alright to me.

I checked the timing a few weeks ago and it was spot on. I plan to bump it up in the future once I get the head studs installed. The fuel filter is about 2 weeks old. It has been about 2 years since the prefilter has been replaced. Might be worth dropping it and checking it this weekend. Do you think that my fuel preasure is to low even though it is in spec?

Fuel pressure low , where are you getting spec.s that tell you that 18 & 26 are OK ?
Its closer to 26 idle & 36 2000 rpm , now load .
If you did not check or change anything with the fuel pressure before changing the main pump and did not have a problem before , the next question is , was the 215 used , maybe a bad OFV .

heres a specs page for you. maby a little low, but i dont suspect the lp.
18-24 at idle 28-36 2000rpm no load. now has this just happened since the new turbo? if you put a bigger one on its not going to act the same. needs more fuel to get going.

Ongoing problems since before the turbo let go causing the replacement. When the 215 pump was originally installed it ran pretty good but you could tell that the springs were a little off on the 4 GSK. Once I hooked the trailer (15K) the truck was shuddering in third gear so bad that I was reving 2nd and skipped to 4th gear thinking that I was losing 3rd gear. I pulled the little spring and it seemed a little better. Power was smoother but defueling was at diferent RPMs. Sometimes 2300 other at 2700 RPM. Still have the slightly eratic defuel, but more prevalent, and gained the stumble at 1k RPM about 20% of the time. So I am going to say that it is getting a worse.
I took the fuel preasure readings from the fuel inlet at the injection pump. I pulled the banjo and installed an old hollowed out overflow valve for a temp gauge mount. I thought about a possible bad overflow valve but wouldnt the preasure stay the same from a weak overflow valve due to a lack of spring preasure? Either way it is the same one off the old 175 pump and is about 2 years old. I think its good but I am contimplating ordering a new one from Infidels source just to be safe.
New turbo is a small S300. HTTurbo model HTBG that I picked up for a song brand new. Spools pretty decent but I think that it has the larger exhaust housing. Also the stumble came about not long afer the DD2 injectors went in a couple of weeks ago.

For a quick test you can pull the OFV apart and give the spring a little stretch to bump the FP up but I don't think that's your problem. While its a little on the the low side it shouldn't affect anything until you get into the upper RPMs at WOT. The other cheap trial I would do is put a known set of good injectors in to see if one of your sticks is the problem. One of yours may be popping early or?
It might be worth pulling the springs and looking at them, not all GSK kits were made equal, some of the offshore China jobs didn't even counter coil the springs allowing them to bind causing huge set-up problems. Do you know where it came from? If they came from a reputable dealer than this wont be a issue. A worn governor section could also cause you similar problems as well.
Wish I could help more but......?

GSK came from Piers so it should be a good kit. Injectors have 2k miles on them and were smoother than the 215 injectors that I pulled out with 40k since they were tested by the injection shop so I think that I am ok there. I think that I will pull the GSK out and start from scratch at that end. Put everything at 6 clicks and see what happens as I dont have the measurments anymore. I will also try to pull the prefilter and give it a cleaning. The above is dependant on how the brake job goes and eats up my time. Thanks for the help guys.

Again , your fuel pressure from LP are low , fix issues as you find them , then if you still have performance issues , look els where [ after pressure ] .
The LP pumps fuel , the OFV makes pressure by restricting the return , so both have to be good to get correct pressures .
You may have more than one issue , but the chance of finding others , when ignoring what you have found , makes it harder to find others .

I will look into getting a new lift pump on order. I originally thought that it was a govenor problem and now I am suspecting the fuel side to be it. Never had a problem on the old injection pump but I am putting more fuel out now than I was previously. I figured that I would play with the gov springs as I already have them and dont have to wait a week for them to show up. The problems are minor as far as drivability go but are starting to get worse. Not to mention that I have only had the truck back from my dad for a month. Got to love deployments. Thanks for the help guys. I got a plan of attack and I will post back the results as to what I find.

Well I think I found the low preasure problem. The spring inside the fuel pump was broken. One full coil was broken off. Needless to say the lift pump was swapped along with the over flow valve. I havent had a chance to check the fuel preasure again but I do have all the parts to install a permanent gauge now. Right now the truck is running smooth and accelerates well but does seem a little flatter than before. I think that I will need to check the timing again when I have a chance to play with the truck. Waiting on rain right now.

Thats whats good about taking the old / suspected parts apart , seeing what went wrong & then knowing more about the systems & how they work .
When I pulled mine apart , I found that the check valves were coming apart .

Good to hear you got it figured out, I would never have pegged the LP with the #s you posted.

Funny thing is that it never ticked, rattled, etc. I just decided to swap due to milage. Only found the spring because the fitting didnt want to come loose.

Local diesel shop always checks the lift pump pressure on the chassis dyno.
Last time I was there he was working on a 98 12 valve the owner said it was a bit flat. Unloaded fuel pressure was withing specs and pump did not tick. Loaded it on the dyno and pressures dropped in the toilet, and still no tick. Just a sick pump.
