lift pump -how often do they fail?

Was wondering what the life-span in general is for our lift pumps? I have some issues with my truck not passing emissions, black smoke, slowly loosing idle rpm's. I know I have to take it in... but how suspect is the pump?
My truck has 201,000 on it now.
Thanks

Jimmy

Uh, the #10 PLATE, 3k GSK, 15.5 deg of timing, and K&N might have a little more to do with it than the lift pump.

There was a thread on this recently, seems like most people got at least 150k miles out of the pump.
My 2500 has the original pump at 252K, the 3500's was replaced at 220k.

I've had the same set up for over four years and always passed the emissions with flying colors. But I'll look at everything, since I am not sure what is causing the problem.
Concerning the 3k gsk, will that go out of adjustment over time?

Thanks
