but a boost leak would not cause a hard start it would cause no power but no hard start. tried it a few mins ago started harder then hell long crank time and kick only once in a while

alright checked fuel pressure about 10 psi at idle and at 2500 rpm didnt even make it to 20 psi clamped return off 30+ gonna get a overflow vavle tomorrow it sounded like a cat engine running with the return open at idle clamp the return off sounds like my other freightliner exact same truck was reading through some other topics and found a tsb that pretty matched all my problems with hard start and no power keeping my fingers crossed but as per the test results this should fix it

Bump the idle adjustment up. Very easy to do. A little goes a long way on it.

anyone got any thoughts timing maybe? does anyone know if they have a keyway between the ip shaft and timing gear or is it just tapered fit?

No keyway, friction fit only.

When you say you gave it half a dozen pedal pumps, I assume you mean it was turning over while you gave it pedal?

so how do you check to see if your pump is in time if you put #1 to tdc is there a mark you line up on the ip and timing gear. and no tried it did not start or even kick stopped pumped the pedal half a dozen times held it to the rug till it fired then let it go

Ok, pumping the pedal does nothing, no acc pump like a gasser. Try holding about 1/4 throttle while starting and see if it fires right off. That is actually what is in the owners manual on our P7100 trucks, some require it, some don't. Mine will crank for what seems like an eternity if I don't give it a bit of throttle, so I just do now.

I don't personally think you have a timing problem just yet, but if you want to time it correctly, see this link.

Yes, there is a timing plug on the pump and the engine, but I personally wouldn't trust it, others do.

yes if you give it some throttle when starting starts fine not sure on the pumping the pedal a few times it just seems to start just after i do it so i do what i have to do to get it started the first time after that it will start on its own after extended crank time or push the throttle while starting then it starts good

anyone got any suggestions? i have scratched almost all the hair off me head but nothing is jumping out. hard start, small lack of power but no smoke when you step on it and a slight stumble after it revs down from a higher rpm but that might be because it idles low but not for sure.i think its a fuel related issue but cannot prove it

I had my prefilter/ fuelheater bowl come loose some time ago, that gave me the joy of longtime cranking every other start and eventually it developed a habbit of stalling, when I turned left, and only left ???

It drove me kinda nuts for a few days before I found it, been running good since

Try to tighten that, I know itīs a longshot, but if it works....as it did for me.

its the same as the dodges in this freight shaker but no fuel heater. also doesnt the dodge trucks have a grid heater or no??? my truck doesnt yesterday i used it to haul hay finally got it going then used it for a few hours after bumping the idle up worked great shut it off fired right back up but that initial start was a serious bugger then tried it again after 6-7 hours later after using it would not start again but the fuel is not draining back because the overflow pops on the first prime maybe need a grid heater installed it was 35oF out yesterday morning and the other freightliner(same exact truck) fired right up im lost !!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, Dodge trucks have a grid heater, but if you donīt and need one it would cause some serious smoke after all that cranking, white smoke that is.
If you crank it for several seconds and donīt have that white smoke on start, youīre not getting fuel injected.

I'd be leaning toward sucking air somewhere before the lift pump, even if it is popping the ofv, doesn't mean there insn't air bubbles in there. I don't use my heater grid until it's below 30 to save my batt/alt, so even though that might not be helping the situation I don't think it's the problem.

After letting it sit for a few hours, try button-priming the system with the bleeder screw cracked open (assuming it has one, if not then the pump inlet line) and see if any bubbles come out after a few good pumps.

Good luck!

PS just throwing this waaay out there, check where the shut down solenoid lever connects to the pump for giggles, I remember reading about someone having starting/low idle issues because the arm had some slip on the shaft it attached to, wouldn't always pick it up all the way.
