I picked up the tab from Cummins a couple months back.
This thread reminded me to get it done.
Hopefully this weekend.
Cummins only sells the tab, but I noticed the kits you can order online have the longer screw.

Thanks to everyone for the KDP stories. Freaked me out I have never heard of this before. Tore mine apart yesterday and it was backed out 1/4"+. Pretty easy fix aside from the fan shroud and windsheild washer tank. Worth it for the peace of mind.

They can always be tightened further, that's the nature of vibration on aluminum parts with steel bolts.
That's part of the reason for the dowel pins.
If you mean have I found any bolts backed out to where they took more than one turn with the wrench to tighten and might thread out further then the answer is no.

I am going to install part number 3958017 (Cummins tab $1.70)this week I have a bit of an oil leak right now , It's not gushing but will leave 6-8 drips in 5 minutes of running and 3-4 drips sitting overnite . does not appear to be the case, as best as I can tell It's the front seal and It's been that way for a year. so hard to tell 160,000kms I don't mind a leaky diesel (the only one it bothers is my inlaws shiny driveway) but quite frankly now I'm nervous so I'm gonna fix that oil leak and cross my fingers that it's only a bad seal

Usually if you get hit by the KDP it means loss of a fair bit of oil. I wouldnt worry much about that.
Since you are going to have it apart, pick yourself up a front gear case cover gasket (p/n: 3918673) and crank seal (p/n: 3804899) from Cummins. Replacing these items will likely fix your leak.
As well, since you will have the timing case cover off, its an excellent time to bump the pump timing up.

Already got the seal and gasket too doc. local cummins shop had all in stock
what's the advantages of bumping the timing (pre exhaust and fuel) and is this something I should do myself? ( I am capable of reading and following instructions) but need to be pointed in the right direction. thanks. picked up and installed a cummins thermostat too (had a new napa) although I haven't noticed ANY difference except the wallet is lighter to the tune of 60 bucks

Just make sure whoever does it has the tools and doesn't use the guess method.

Yes. I have seen lots of bolts loose. If both my digital cameras didn't take a dump i would post a picture of a bolt ground in half by the cam gear on one I repaired the other day . when it came in the shop it sounded like it had a gear drive supercharger on it.
