KDP Fix Needed

After reading about this thing extensively, I realize it's not something I should take a chance on any longer. Problem is, the local diesel shop didn't have a clue what I was talking about.

I'd prefer to hire someone who has the tools and experience to well, pardon the expression...git-er-done

:-)

Please contact me via PM to make arrangements. I'm in Florence, KY but would be willing to drive a half hour or so...maybe on a Saturday or Sunday?

Thanks,

Ed

My local diesel shop did not know what I was talking about either. I just printed out and gave them a couple KDP articles/threads off the net. They tabbed it.

OK Thats a good idea. I'll get the kit. Is there a link somewhere at this site to order it?

Thanks,

Ed

Nothin' special about tabbing it... TST's kit is excellent.
It's easy to do except for removing the fan in a dodge PU... Freightliner's probably got a different arrangement for the fan shroud. Good luck there...
Using cardboard to protect the radiator is a valid recommendation.

Don't bother with purchasing a new Cummins cover gasket.. If yours is equipped with a gasket, just clean the old one and use the grey silicone sealer on it.
On reassembly, procure a couple of real long metric bolts and cut their heads off to help align the cover&gasket w/ sealer to the gearcase. I did OK without them but I thought it sure would've been a good timesaver while lining up the screw holes.

Tell your shop it's the "timing gear cover alignment pin". If they still don't know, get out of there before they screw up your truck. There has to be another shop.

I just did my KDP last week on my 94. I did not take fan out completely. Just removed fan bracket that is bolted to the block. I took 3 zip ties and and suppoted the fan so it was resting against the radiator. As close to the top of the radiator as possible....... The top zip tie went over a long screw driver that was touching the upper fan shroud on one side. And the valve cover on the other.. The fan was positioned out of the way for easy access to timing cover.....

Worked great. And did not damage radiator at all.... Total time for install was 2 hours.....

Another idea is to make the top of the radiator shroud removable. You could carefully cut a section of the upper fan shroud out. Then use aluminum tabs and a rivet gun and re attach the shroud section... I have done this on hot rods many of times with great success......

I have done several of these KDPs. I have tabbed them all and made my own tab. Total time on each was about 55 minutes, including making the tab. It is relatively easy if you take the bolts out of the shroud, and then take the belt off, then take the fan off at the engine, lifting the fan assembly and shroud out together. It goes back in the same way.
Everything else is straight forward, take the balancer bolts out, after marking it to align it back in the same spot when reassembling it, and then take the cardboard that the gasket comes in, trace the gasket and punch holes in the tracing matching the gasket pattern. This will let you put the bolts in the holes as they come out and keep you from mixing the bolts up. When you get the cover off, clean it real good, replace the front seal, keeping everything really clean, put a little Permatex Forma a gasket 2 to hold the gasket in place, then put the gasket on the cover. Let it sit while you tab the pin and tighten the bolts in the case. Put locktite on all of the bolts in the case and torque to 18 ft lbs. Clean the crankshaft hub off with brake cleaner, and put the cover back on using the alighnment tool. That is the plastic sleeve that comes installed on the front main seal. Tighten all of the bolts in an alternating pattern to 18 ft lbs. Replace the balancer and torque to 95 ft lbs, then install the fan and shroud as one unit. I know it is heavy, maybe you can get some help starting the bolts while you hold it. They get torqued to 18 ft lbs also. Just about all of the 10 mm bolts are 18 ft lbs.

Put the belt back on and don't forget to tight the shroud bolts. Breath easier now.
I don't think I missed anything, I was doing it off the top of my head
If you have any questions, ask and you shall get an answer.
