Just dropped the pan...

Just dropped the pan on the new to me '97 4x4 w/auto trans. I found about one tablespoon of black grey on the magnet. There was just a tiny amount of metal on the pan bottom.

Not bad for an auto that had the pan off for the first time since factory built 135,000 miles and 9 years ago. The previous owner had always serviced it where they did the fluid change by machine, rather than dropping the pan and changing the filter.

I may detail some of the things that I like about this truck vs the PSD I had for 40,000 miles and two years when I get the time and put some miles on my CTD. But right off the top is the tighter turning radius. I can actually go into a parking lot without planning the whole route in advance.

If you go to the tech facts in the top menu, you will find a very good article on using universal hydraulic fluid in these transmissions. If you do that, you will never find any more metal shavings or mud in the pan or filter.

I have seen that. One thread that included a trans builder (forget who) that was also testing motor oil (which did not work out) who said the hydraulic fluid lacked some additives that atf fluid had. He was not making any judgement but the inference was negative. I'd like to lhear more about using it.

Bill Condolay at DTT tried using hydraulic fluid in his truck for period of time a while back when they were testing fluid types...they found that it didnt have the detergent qualities that atf fluid has

dropping the pan gets a very small amoutn of fluid out...like 4q...while the tranny holds something like 9 i think?......there are ways to pump out more fluid using ur engine......if i remmeber it involves disconnecting one of the tranny cooler hoses near the rad and then let the engine run for a bit till u get the fluid out

BUT!!!!! i dont remember this stuff so do a search on it...its described in detail
