injection pump ticking

I have a 98 2500 12 valve mainly stock except BHAF, truck has 310000km, installed new tranny a week ago, new lift pump at 300000km

I was driving yesterday at highway speed and i heard a ticking from up front, put it in neutral and coasted to a stop, and motor died. started back up and revved to about 2000rpm and ran fine drove another half hour and it started ticking again and stumbled and died, towed it home in fear of dropped valve or what ever. got home fired it up and was running fine, next day i fired it up and ran fine took it for a drive and started ticking again, cracked all the injector lines and the rough idle never corrected itself. today I removed the overflow valve and everything looks fine, the ticking sounds like its coming from the injection pump any one have any ideas, injectors, injection pump,

Always a good idea to just make sure the lift pump isn't totally shot with a fuel pressure test. I'm not an expert by any means but I'd say if it's not the lift pump/bad sporadic air leak (?) then it's something in the injection pump.

When mine did that it was a sticking plunger in the pump. I don't know if the 96' and newer have that problem though.

Overflow valves can tick.
Best price> http://www.fostertruck.com/Overflow_valve.htm

If you don't want to just throw parts at it you need to check the fuel pressure.

Then again if it runs fine the tick probably isn't going to cause any problems.

Also, not sure about the ticking sound, but maybe check out the shut down solenoid? If that drops a bit it will croak the motor/rough idle. I don't know if it could somehow make a ticking sound.
