I think I found the Culprit
I think I found the Culprit
Well in the past, I've had problems with the truck, low egt's, not very much smoke with all of my mods. I retimed it, helped a lot but still didn't cure the problem. Last night I removed my fuel plate from the afc housing and took her for a spin. I did this to remove any thought that the governor arm is catching. With the fuel plate removed you should be rolling coals like a freight train, especially with the 370 injectors and delivery valves i have in my truck. Nothing, no difference, it only smoked when the torque convert locked up and gunned it before the turbo could catch up. I'm thinking fuel pressure, I do hear a ticking sound at high rpm and is slightly noticable at normal throttle. This might be the lift pump, does anyone know of where to get a cheap fuel pressure guage, not a permanent one, just one to check it every once in a while. I have all day on saturday to dig into it, so any suggestions will help guys.
Not sure which adapter you are talking about. If you mean something to screw into the block i would think a mis match bunch of brass fittings would get you what you need for just testing. Any cheapo oil pressure gauge will do. The ones from autozone have some brass fittings with them may be all you need.

With the TST adaptor you should add a grease gun hose and 1/8" coupling for the gauge and you'll be set.
Best if you can read the gauge while driving under load. With a GG hose there is enough to pass the gauge though the back of the hood and hold it down with a wiper.
Personally it sounds more like you have a slipping tranny more than low FP.
had issues with my 95 also. Its a little better now with the mods I got and it does reach 1250F and 28psi.
Turns out it needed a new overflow valve (theres some difference between aftermarket ones nad hte one cummins will give ya, it seems). Also needed a new return hose.
Im looking into a 215 reman IP since Im convinced these 160's just dont move enough fuel and thats just how theyre setup internally. Could also have one recalibrated to flow like a 215 I suppose.
That fuel pressure gauge is real important to have even on the old p-pumps. If you get a remote sender Dont bother trying to plumb in polyethylene hose with compression fittings and get the grease gun hose from geno's with a female-female adapter on one end.

it doesn't feel like it's slipping. the rpms dont shoot up and i go nowhere. the truck still has quite a bit of power and get up and go, but when the torque converter locks it throws you in the back of your seat and i can go from 40 to 80 in a few seconds at wot(but still no smoke just a little haze). this transmission is pretty built, i don't think it's slipping.
Is this a stock automatic? I know mine has a really bad torque convertor. really poor efficiency. You see a big RPM drop when it shifts and locks.
Once its in lockup its great but Im afraid to kill the TCC until I get my DTT setup.
