How do I advance timing to 16*?

Ok I keep reading about everyone advancing the timing to 16*. What would this do for me? What is the procedure and tools required? Does this hurt the warranty any?

Thanks for the help

mike (starting to catch the bug...)

You need to find a person who knows what they are doing. You will really know if they use a dial indicator that's really the only way to get dead on.

I'm also a member of TDR and one of the members did my timing with his personal tools. I really couldn't tell any driving difference, but I gained 1.5MPG! ;D

Can't answer your question but wondering myself. I've also got a 98 still stock. You should probably post this question on the 12V Engine and Drivetrain forum to get a quicker response. Good luck and keep learning.

Re:How do I advance timing to 16*?

I did up my timing but let me tell you that it is quite a job to do without the proper tools. If you are only going to do your own the tools are expensive enough to not make it worth while. If you have a decent diesel shop around that would probably be your best bet. It would have been to my advantage to have someone else do it. I was getting A LOT of white smoke on start up (looked like the old Cummins NTC 400) and the pyro was running a little high. I didn't really notice any fuel mileage increase, but I noticed that it started better, not nearly as much smoke, a lot more "get up and go", and less throttle pressure to get and keep it going. Maybe RCW or somebody that has morer expertise will chime in too.
Tom

Here is how I understand the timing of these trucks:

Timing can be adjusted on the first gen trucks in a more "traditional" manner.

The timing on the second gen trucks is set inside the pump and is pre-set at the factory, or who ever built the pump. It can be adjusted, but takes someone with much experience and the proper tools. Best to take it in and have it done.

The timing on the third gen trucks is controlled by the computer. I dont think these are adjustable with traditional tools. (I may be wrong about this).

This is how I understand the timing on these trucks.

Rich.

Re:How do I advance timing to 16*?

I usually do all my own work but I took my truck to a diesel shop to get the timing set. They charged me 1 hour labor, and replaced the pump nut with a deeper one so they could torque it higher. Total cost was about 1/3 of the price of a timing kit from Snap-on. The timing had slipped to 8 degrees. I had them set it to 15.5. Ended up with more power, less smoke and a little more noise. I don't know about mileage because I had it done just before winter set in.
