How Bad is 10w30 in a CTD

I took my truck to an oil change place today and the "service tech" told me they only use 10w30 or 10w40 in all thier trucks. I requested 15w40 Rotella and they did'nt have it. Needless to say I left w/out an oil change today. So how bad would that have been, or would it have been ok?

Pretty light oil to run unless it is cold out (a fair bit below freezing).

Well this is GA, we don't see alot of cold here, maby one or two weeks in the teens which is'nt cold. My biggest concern was the oil they had was just plain old penzoil, not a diesel oil. I ran a Detroit 466 for about 8yrs. in a IH straight truck and we always used Rotella 15w40 and never had a prob. Is rotella approved for CTD?

Not 100% sure if it approved or not but I know that a lot of members run that. I would not have a problem running Rotella in my truck but find that is easier to get Cheveron Delo locally for me.

Well this is the first oil change I've had to do on the truck because I have only had it for a month and a half. I'm just gonna do it myself and save the $ for the winter when I wont want to crawl under the truck. Plus I used to work in a oil shop in my teens and saw how some of those guys acted under cars. We had one guy that would just change the filter and add a quart, wipe the drain plug and send it on. Customers never knew! It seems just as easy to me to go ahead and drain it. Kinda like the kid who takes all the time to make the soap bar look used to make his mom think he washed.

rotella 10-30 is a good choice, even in GA heat. If you tow heavy, the 15-40 is probably better.

Watch the oil pressure. If you have good oil pressure, your oil is thick enough (for the most part).

if it's not diesel rated (i think CH may be the latest rating) i wouldn't use it. the diesel rating has additives to suspend the soot better and counteract acids formed.

I will run 10w30 for the winter up here as long as it is diesel rated it is fine.It can be tough to find a diesel rated CH one, usually get mine at the local UFA.

As others have said, you must use an oil that says that it is rated for diesel engines or compression ignition engines. Anything else is not rated for the pressures on components inside of a diesel engine. The current diesel oil rating is CI (though CH is fine on anything before a 2007).

Sure thing, your not to far from valdosta are you. I'm in the same boat as you, nobody around me is a CTD fan. Mostly just kids with chainsaw engines in their little honda's. But on the subject I changed it myself today with rotella 15-40. I'm not switchig to synthetic, with 168k on the clock I don't want any leaks!

I've run either 5w-30 or 10w-30 royal purple in my first gen since break-in and have never had a problem. It holds up to the heat like a thicker oil so theres no worries there and instead of a detergent, it's a natural solvent so soot control is "under control" so to speak Just remember that with all of these "diesel rated" oils etc.... lubricity and cleanliness is still the key

over 300,000 miles and not burning a drop of oil
