Homemade Air Intake

Ok, this may be a stupid cheap idea but here goes. I was looking at air intakes like the AFE air induction system stage 1 and I could not understand why something like this would cost $230. All it is, is an air filter clamped to the end of your stock air intake hose with a half open box to hold it, right? Well if that is the case, I was looking around in Advance Auto (out of boredom) and I pulled down one of the K&N air filters (do not know what it was made for) and it looked like the same cone air filter with a 3 or 4" open end with a metal clamp. The cost was $59. Ok here is the question, could you not fab a aluminum box and just clamp the K&N air filter to the stock hose? When I saw the filter gears started turning in my head so I thought I would ask if it has been done or if it sounds doable. Thanks, John

First the K&n is of lesser quality than the AFE, search for posts on that, next to make an aluminum box to hold the filter and get a tight seal around it will take time and alot of skill but if you have both go for it! Just my 02cents.

I plan on doing the same thing, except building a box around the BHAF, I am going to make the intake coming in from the stock fender hole, and then a Ram air, I would have gone with the Scotty but I dont like the idea of drilling a huge hole in my firewall. JMHO.

Go for it get some sheet metal steel, aluminum if you have or can get access to a sheet metal brake probably would make it alot easier. Afe filter all the way K&N products are crap believe me I have expeirience with them with gas and diesel applications. I sell the afe stage 1 intakes for a 94-02 dodge Edit but I can understand why you feel this way if I had the means of making my own to sell for less I would.

I am working on one right now. I'm using the stock pipe from air box to the turbo. I have built a alumium box were the stock air cleaner sits. and have run a pipe threw it to connect to the intake piping. I bought a replacement AFE filter from PDR and got the aluminum from a scrap metal yard into the whole thing for 100.00
not to bad. I have also cut the fire wall to get air in from the cowl.
The hardest part was finding the 4.5" tubing. Most stuff is 4" or 5". I got a 4" Id tube 4.5" od that was heavy wall and machined the inside out to improve the air flow.
