help me get my truck running

i drove less than a mile to the gas station, when my truck started sputtering and died. i haven't really got to looking at it yet, but it seems the injection pump isn't getting fuel or something. i tried hand priming it, and it made a sound like fuel (or air?) was bareley squeezing by something. then when i pushed the water drain valve in on the fuel filter, fuel came squirting out as if it was under pressure. any ideas? would the overflow valve do this? plugged fuel filter? i doubt that, it a fairly new filter.

I would recommend starting by checking your fuel shutdown solenoid. It should be in the up position for your truck to be running. The next thing to do would be to see where you are getting fuel to(by cracking lines at different places).

yeah, i think it might be the shut down selenoid, it doesn't move with the key, but i can push it up and it will stay there for a while. after i crank on the starter for a while, it will fire and sputter for a while, then run fine, and then sputter and die again, i haven't tryed tieing the shut off in the run position yet, though. would the shutoff selonoid cause the truck to sputter like that?

If the shutoff solenoid is not pulled all of the way up, it could cause the truck to sputter. A zip tie around it should hold it up and then you can rule it out as to whether it is the cause or not.

You definitely have a fuel problem but it could also be air in the lines. If you have an intermittant air leak, you could get the behavior you describe. Have you tried filling the tank and seeing whether that cures it?

with the shutoff selenoid removed, and the shutoff "arm" in the run position, it has the same problem. takes forever to start, then sputters, then runs fine for about 30 seconds, then sputters and dies. i can't get it running long enough to take it to get fuel. i probably only have about 5 or so gallons left in the tank maybe 10, tops.

Maybe an air leak? Have you cleaned out the pre-filter and changed your main filter?

when i hand pump the lift pump, and crack the bleeder valve on top of the fuel filter all i get is foam, and a hissing sound. is it possible that someone stole my fuel, and the problem is that my tank is dry? i don't have a working fuel gauge, i just re-set the trip odometer after each fill up.

That may not be accuate enough for you, if you run empty all the time maybe farily close but change your routine and pull a load or something and all that is out the window- see what i mean. Take a can and go get you some fuel. Let us know. Good Luck

well, i was out of fuel, and my shutoff selenoid was sticking. cleaned the selenoid, now it works fine. put 2 five gallon cans of fuel in, got the air out, and now everything is back to normal. either someone stole some fuel, or i'm getting around 10 mpg. the worst i've ever gotten was about 16.5 mpg. thanx for all the replies.
