Hard shifting
Hard shifting
The truck is a 97 5speed. Sometimes the truck will not shift. You can push in the clutch but it wont go into gear. After playing with it for a little wile, pumping the clutch. It works fine. But if the clutch is cold or hasnt been used for a couple hours it does the same thing. Im thinking slave cylinder. The clutch fluid level is fine. What do you all think?
Try putting it in say third of fourth first then put it in the lower gears this will help stop the trans from turning. Larger trucks do the same but they have a clutch brake to solve the problem. With a performance clutch it will not stop the trans from turning making it hard to get into gear when cold
The clutch is stock and hasnt been touched, the truck has 410's, 143tho miles. Pretty much all of these are with a 30ft flatbed hooked to it and the avg load is right around 32tho. The truck will not go in to any gear when cold. Im thinkin the slave cylinder or maybe the clutch is just worn out. But if it was the clutch wouldnt it do it all the time? Not just when its cold? I appreciate any input. And would like to get a little more before I start throwing $ at it.
Mine does the same thing. I try to push the stick forward into 3rd, hold it against the synchros and then shift into 1st. I also sometimes stop while still in gear just to keep the gearbox from spinning, but I hate to hold the clutch down for a long time. I am thinking the clutch does not release enough, I've got to get a hold of a service manual and see if there is an adjustment on the slave cylinder. Mine does this all randomly even when hot, in fact even more so than when its cold.

Let's not rule out the clutch master cylinder yet it could very well be the master or a combination of the master and slave. I had a bad master once and I put on two new slaves before I realized the master was bad.
We recently had the 5th gear nut back off for the 5th time and while we were workin on the truck we replaced the mainshaft with a fully splined one, throwout bearing, clutch and pilot bearing. The slave cylinder seemed ok. The throwout bearing was shot and the clutch was pretty worn considering you couldnt slip it. I think the pressure plate was screwed up. I hope it still doesnt do it after we get it all back together.
If the slave is not leaking it is fine it only has one seal and it will leak to th out side. The master can leak internally ( loosing presser past the plunger seal ). Also did you use the right oil.
