GSK... how hard?

I just got my 3K GSK from piers, but I am a little intimidated by the install. I had no problem grinding/reinstalling my fuel plate, but this seems a little more precise than that. So how hard is it to install these things? I checked out the install on CumminsDatabase.com. Do I really need calipers and all that jazz? Any pitfalls to look out for? The local shop wanted me to take the pump completely off the truck before I took it to them, so I'm not real confident in their abilities.

On another note- DSS=best $200 I ever spent

I would do the calipers definately

ive done 3 or 4 of them, and in all honesty if goin thru the side, then they would be about a 4 or 5 on a ten scale. Why so high? Its just MHO, all the adjustments and gettin them correct is rather time consuming, as is getting the measurements from the top of the stud to the little crevice in the retainer nut. Takeing the assembly apart isnt hard at all, and adjustments made thru the top are the easiest by far.. Also if you go thru the side, u have to remove a little "antimony" type metal arm with an 8mm socket, although not hard to do, it saves u a world of headache if you just remove it..

Now if you dont have calipers (which i think u should) about 6 3/4 turns will get u somewhere in the ballpark of where it should be. Its what i remember readin somewhere, dont quote me on it.. OR you can count the clicks on the little retaining nuts, which can be a bother as well.. I can honestly tell u, that i dont remember the measurements on mine, i think i have them at .55 thousands each... or in that range.

BUT do beware, if you are off a bit ull have to readjust to get close to the idle to make minimal adjustments to the screw only, and with a 4K kit, the throttle becomes rather touchy.

Its all trial and error, once u get it dialed in right, BELIEVE ME its well worth it..

Rick

I didn't use Calipers, I planned on counting the number of clicks it took to take the retainer nut off. But....the retainer nut stops clicking after a couple full turns so I just counted the number or 1/4 turns. And it was somthing like 24-28 1/4 turns or about what rick said, each persons seems to be alittle different. It's not rocket science once u get going it goes smooth. worst thing ur idle will be to high or low and u just have to adjust the clicks on each nut until ur right on the idle u want.

I got mine back on the exact number of 1/4 turns that it took to take off, and my idle was 1100 when I was done. So i backed off 2 clicks on both nuts.
