grid heater elements
grid heater elements
Ok, so something electrical went wrong and I had my grid heaters stuck in the on position and one of the elements burnt through the contact and is now dead. I have pulled the plenium off and removed the broken one and currently am waiting on gaskets.
I would like to know if there is anywhere besides the dealership that I could find an element to replace the broken one? None of the parts places around even have a clue.
This is also the version where they made the grid heater housing and the plenium one unit rather than separate so I am able to find a few of the grid heater units but I do not believe they have the same connection orientation.
Would there be any problems just putting on an older two piece cover and making this a cheap fix?
Also just for giggles does anyone know of an affordable alternative to the banks twin ram setup that also retains the grid heaters?

cheap fix is wire up the working one, leave the bad disabled..
before hooking up new one you had better test the grid relays, likely its stuck on causing the grid to burn out over time, not to mention the huge electrical load it causes the alternator

yes for the summer it is just going to be put back together and nothing will be hooked up till I figure out went wrong. I would like to have it fixed by this fall so that I have two working elements rather than one because it is real nice to be able to start it if there isnt access to electricity.

Going to the two piece grid heater is just fine, I switched to that on my 12v when I had a bunch of parts powder coated.
You should be able to go to Cummins for replacement elements, I doubt it was a Dodge design.

Everything you need to know about grids> http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/trouble...niford_htr.htm
I'm very surprised that an element would burn out from staying on without causing a lot of other damage. The fusible link from the battery to the relays should have burn out first unless someone eliminated it.
They get very hot, enough to melt the airhorn
