It sounds like your overflow valve is sticking. Factory specs are 17-21 psi at an idle and 26-30 at 2000rpm free spin (No load).

Did you stretch your overflow spring?

That's too high. It might be ok but I heard ticking when my fuel psi went over 43.

Fuel pressure over 45psi can blow out internal injection pump seals or even crack your fuel filter wide open.
Sounds to me like something even worse is going on with the high pressures you're seeing- someone has blocked off the overflow valve entirely or a return line/hose is kinked.
With no return fuel flowing though the pump things can get very hot and dry and cause damage. The P pump isn't entirely oil cooled and lubed.
Either that or your gauge doesn't have a dampener on it and you're reading the high end of the pump spikes or the gauge itself has been destroyed by running without a dampener and isn't reading right.

I'm running WVO on my 96' and a am wondering if I will harm anything by slightly increasing the fuel PSI with a inline lift pump?
