fuel guage problem
fuel guage problem
I have a problem with my fuel guage when it gets to half a tank it goes between empty and a quarter of a tank. I stop a fill it up and it only takes 13 gallons. It started in the cold weather below 20 degrees. I have a 97 2500 with 50000 miles on it.

Hunt,

Yup. Sounds like your in-tank sender is shot. The fix is replacing the $40 sender AFTER dropping the tank. I did this by dropping the tank from the engine dirrection. I left the back up inside the housing and lowered the front of the tank. Just some large bolts and a floor jack. The pain was getting the platic ring screw (6-8" dia) containing the sending unit off. When you pull out the sender you'll be thinking, "Now I know what planned Obsolecense is." Poor design. Not a tough job. Quick suggestion....try to get your tank as empty as you can...35 gal's is heavy.

If the sender is intermittent, the complete failure is just around the corner. PAY attention to your trip odometer, or you may be left on empty somewhere!

Good luck.

TJ

Re:fuel guage problem
definately the fuel sending unit in tank. I had same problem about 6 months ago and changed it out with a couple of floor jacks, be sure tank is near empty first lol. Mine would register full when filling and about 3/4 tank it would go to empty, so I used the odometer for months, knowing I could run 450miles w/o running out. I sweated several times though! good luck
Re:fuel guage problem
Got the same problem with mine has been that way for 1 1/2 years just go by the trip meter. Got caught once. That is when I notice a major drop in fuel economy planning to get a day off & a round tuit. to fix it. I was working on the 450 mile trip also.. the time I got caught was 415 miles.. just needed 10 more... I even figured taking 50 miles off the 500 I got on a few tanks would give me a buffer.... NOT
Good luck Now I have a way for the fix too! Darn list getting bigger.
Re:fuel guage problem
That part about getting the tank empty is REAL important. Not only is the fuel heavy, when you goe to raise a tank with a lot of fuel in it with your floor jack, the sides will pucker out and it is a real B*&^% to get the straps back on.

Empty tank goes on REAL easy.
